An unusual perch

An unusual perch
After a long day of botanizing the property of Keith Logan and his wife NW of Calgary, on 21 August 2013, a friend and I were back in Calgary and just driving on busy Glenmore Trail over the Reservoir, when we spotted this Double-crested Cormorant perched on one of the very tall street lights. It was the very first time I had ever seen one of these large birds sitting on this kind of perch : ) Just managed to get a very quick shot through the car window. Made a nice ending to a very enjoyable day with the Logans.

LeapFrog has particularly liked this photo

Haha ... love this shot ... they do perch on everything and are making a comeback here after being decimated by DDT decades ago ... many people including Fishers do not like this bird and have convinced our Provincial and Local Government to oil their eggs and cull them ... why, they say that they eat too many of the fish fry they fish for, for sport ... the same fish that the Government transplanted from the Pacific coast in the Great Lakes for the sports fishers ... the same Chinook Salmon that has virtually destroyed our Native Trout, Lake Trout, Smelt and many other small Native fish ... all this for the sake of sports ... BTW, Chinook Salmon (aka Spring Salmon) are a tasteless Salmon species ... so most are allowed to die after being caught and thrown away after a smiling photo is taken with the conquering heros ... :((
