A prehistoric fish?

A prehistoric fish?
Guarding the trail on the left! Off the Needle Rock trail, in the Painted Hills north of Reno. Looking southeast; Pyramid Lake in the background. We're just off the Rez here; in fact, we bought a permit from the tribe so we could park where we did!

A big fish you have caught:-) The landscape and vegetation remind me of certain arid areas in NZ's South Island!

;) I'm surprised at the comparison--my mental image of the South Island is of forests & snowcapped peaks!

In Central Otago in the lee of the Southern Alps they have dry Tussock grasslands, long glacial lakes and a rather continental climate.

I think not, Steve! But it's a splendid view and shot! Which tribe did you buy the pass from? Or is that a sort of non-pc question now?

Thanks, Andy! Pyramid Lake is the centerpiece of the eponymous Paiute Reservation, so that's the tribe you deal with. What tends to be politically incorrect these days is referring to Native Americans generically as "Indians." Identifying them by tribe is politically correct!

Good, so I would have been correct in guessing the Paiute.

Stunning shot, Steve. I'm no naturalist, but I don't really think that's a fish.

Sorry to butt in but continuing on my (short) theme with Steve, your town is named after the local indiginous population and it it would be perfectly pc to say so.
Mind you, using the name 'Falls' could lead to all kinds of problems.(Not sure what these might be but I'm working on it).

Up too late again, Andy? I'm not sure what you're talking about. Oh, it's probably just me.

As for the falls, there aren't any. There were minor ones a few decades ago, but they were more like rapids at the head of the Klamath River. The federal land and water reclamation people (or, whatever that's called) knocked them down to "manage" the water in the Klamath Basin region. They rearranged topography all over the place in some major ways. It's complicated. That's all I know and I'm pretty sketchy on the topic.

Now you are confusing me, Diane! I recall the Klammath as a native tribe (I used to know a lot about the native tribes of America - although I have forgotten much). Whether it is PC or not to refer to indigens by their tribal name, I have no idea! That is all I was asking!
Decided to Google it and yes, I was right: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klamath_Tribes

Yes, I'd go along with Gudrun's comparison - the NZ Alps on the South Island create a rain shadow to the east, hence relatively dry areas.

And the Otago sun trap region produces my all-time favourite wine (more or less any pinot noir from there, but I wistfully remember one called Wild Earth!).
An amazing fact considering that it ain't all that far from the Antarctic Circle!
