Antonio d'Andrade by Borelli
Antonio d'Andrade (1854-1942); Portuguese tenor who created the role of Roberto at the première of Puccini's opera "Le Villi" on 31 May 1884 at the Teatro dal Verme in Milan. He was the older brother of the famous baritone Francisco d'Andrade (1859-1921) and in Lisbon he was trained by the same teachers as his brother. He then moved to Italy for further study and in 1882 he made his debut at Varese as Fernando in Donizetti's "La Favorita". In the following years he performed at Turin, Venice, Milan, Prato etc. At the Teatro del Verme in Milan he created in 1884 the roles of Roberto in Puccini's "Le Villi" and of Sandro in "Marcellina" by Alberto Favara Mistretta. In 1885 and 1886 he made guest appearances with his brother in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Warsaw. In 1889 and 1890 he appeared in London -again with his brother- at Covent Garden as Radames in "Aida", José in "Carmen" and in the title role of "Lohengrin". He performed also in Lisbon, Berlin, Vienna, Odessa and Rotterdam. His most memorable roles were Arnold in "Guillaume Tell", the Duke in "Rigoletto", Vasco da Gama in "L'Africaine" and the title role in "Faust". After his retirement from the stage he was a vocal teacher at Lisbon


On the photo he is seen in the title role of Donizetti's "Poliuto".
