A Conflicted Day

A Conflicted Day
Created from DALL·E 2 – Open AI and Smart Photo Editor.

As millions of Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on this conflicted day, it is important to remember this is a day of mourning for the indigenous peoples of the USA especially since “thanksgivings” were repeatedly offered to celebrate acts of genocide and murder committed against Native American peoples. There can be no joy until the 415-year occupation, though realistically irreversible, is addressed. At a minimum Native American nations (575 at least – if the Eastern Pequots are given their due recognition) should be granted autonomy over their lands and some form of reparations consisting of land awards and financial compensation are given for their suffering to ensure self-sufficiency. The same holds true with regard to reparations for African-Americans because of the disgusting stain of slavery and racism, the latter that remains endemic in our 21st century society.

The soft pastel colors represent a new dawn with the soft red symbolizing life, the abundance of lines represent natural phenomena, water and the Native American connection with the spiritual world. The two circles represent the sun (a symbol of life giving warmth, healing and peace) and the moon (a guide and protector). The silhouetted tepees represent Native American peoples and nations.

Therefore, as Americans celebrate Thanksgiving – we should be mindful of the sadness of Native Americans, take a moment to mourn and pray for their ancestors who were slaughtered, yearn for the day the 415-year occupation is addressed, and give thanks that in spite of the evils of the past, Native Americans are STILL HERE and LIVE along with our traditional gratitude for family, friends and health and for those who believe regardless of faith – to God for His abundance of blessings.

I was far from the Native American people's genocide. There have been too many genocides in the world, it seems that without them there wouldn't be significant progress in civilization. That's the excuse for all fascisms and fundamentalisms.

We have to stop and think about carnage for nothing.

Memorials such as this one are helpful in moderating historical developments.

Outstanding creation, as ever, William!

I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. William. I have some knowledge of the plight of the indigenous peoples but, if I knew about the Eastern Pequots, i've long since forgotten. Please remind me. Your work of art is simply wonderful - one of my all-time faves from your fabulous series.

Great work and interesting notes, William. Similar issues apply here, unfortunately. European colonialism has only recently begun to be recognised for what it was.

The plight of the aboriginals is equally woeful. So sad indigenous peoples were dehumanized and murdered during the colonial era. :( One can only be grateful there are survivors and take the time to understand their diversity and rich traditions at a minimum.

a wonderful art work, William! I agree with what you say! unfortunately the history of the world is succession of wars and oppressions and the murders and the usurpers were acclaimed as conquerors, heroes and adventurers.....it's really very sad... :-((

thanks so much for your information...
I've been to the USA several times and I was actually very sad that the 'national pride' of the Americans was so emphasized. And as you rightly say, it is based on the expulsions and exterminations of the indigenous people that happened a long time ago.
in fact, it always looked like history in the US only begins 300-150 years ago.
It was a pity for me as a European that people didn't go back to their roots. And yes, we Europeans also have a great deal to blame for the 'conquest'.
With kind regards aNNa*

Bravo for your explanation, which fully answers any doubt about your title! Rather than a celebration, Thanksgiving must be an occasion to remind the harm that was done in the past, and to make a tribute to the victims of that harm, who got so far no compensation at all.
I wish you a peaceful Christmas, William, in good health, and sheltered from the storms.

Not only has this photo got a deep meaning it is also so well deigned and a tribute to your artwork, William.

In a similar way evictions of a significant number of tenants in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, mostly in two phases from 1750 to 1860, resulted in crofters and farmers being displaced from their homes and land, in order that the landlords could make more money. Eventually "assisted passages" became common, and landowners paid the fares for their tenants to emigrate. Hence the term 'Highland clearances' came into being.

It seems to be all down to power, money and ownership.
