Battlements. Buitrago del Lozoya.

Battlements. Buitrago del Lozoya.
It was a large town by medieval standards and the battlements go a long way round! In the distance the Sierra de Guadarrama marking the borders of Madrid and Segovia provinces, although for many centuries this area was claimed by Segovia and they even went to war over it. (Madrid won in the end)..

Walls of Moorish origin (11th century), restored in the 15th century…
A fine place to walk by the river.

I should have made that clear, Isabel. I did take a photo of the official 'notes' but I didn't copy them as they seemed incomplete. i.e. no mention of the Moors!
I'll soon post a shot of the castle next to the church and there the two styles can be seen, even if the buildings all have a mix of styles, the Moors being by far the superior architects of the era!

Brilliant photo here Andy;. I do like the ruins left behind. Being so far south in Spain, it's probably built by the Moors.

Actually it's dead central in Spain and to the north of the capital Madrid. But yes, Moorish architecture dominated most of Spain for quite some time! Thank you, Jenny!

Superb composition Andy, with the leading lines heading into the distant hills. I'm loving the textures in the foreground too.

It's interesting how the provinces had the battles over territories, similar to elsewhere in Europe.
Wonderful battlements, and composition leading through.

Thank you, Gillian!
The main battle was the centuries long but relentless recapturing of all of Spain by the Christians, after the domination by the Islamic Moors from 732. The battle I mention was in the 19th century, long after the Moors had ben pushed right back.

I just love that old stonework! There is nothing like that over here. What a great view you have from there!

These are vast fortifications with a long history! It seems that Spain was similar to Germany in that the regions and towns often were in conflict with their neighbours...

With the added complication that towns and regions were continually changing hands between Christian and Muslim!
