Winging it over Dove Stones

Winging it over Dove Stones
Sometimes people inquire into my other hobby of 'Flight Simulation' and ask 'how realistic is that?' Well my friends on here will be aware that my favourite local photographic location is near my home: Dovestones Reservoir, Greenfield. So here I am flying one of my favourite virtual aircraft, the Piper PA28R Arrow, at just over 100 knots and 1090ft asl over Dovestones reservoir itself and looking up to the next reservoir: Yeoman Hey. The PiP shows the same aircraft being flown by me, over Greenfield and approaching the front of the Dovestones green earth dam wall just before I got to this position. One can see how the graphics have improved to almost life-like here. These are of-course-screen shots but I can tell you, that it is pretty life-like in many respects.
Program= XPlane 11, Graphics by Orbx- Real-Earth-Britain Central, Aircraft by JustFlight.
See the adjacent page to complete the story.
6x Pips, outside this plane, New York, Switzerland and Manchester in B77 at night & A10. Enjoy.

Ha ha John, good to know that you were not put-off by this 'none' camera photo. I was amazed after getting this scenery just how realistic it was. To get here, I had to fly from Manchester airport, the easiest way for me was to follow the motorways and visually known items such as churches, buildings and roads etc until I recognized Oldham and the distinctive Saddleworth moors. A toss-up to whether I had this or the other as the main picture.
Cheers, Herb

Hi Füsun, great that you enjoyed these. I have always wanted to fly, since I was a kid. I actually had a flying lesson once too but I must admit that flying on my computer is most satisfying, either low in these small planes or to major cities of the world in my realistic jet passenger planes using real maps, weather and air-traffic control. A wonderful feeling indeed, to really fly.
All the Best for 2019, Herb

My pleasure to have you along my friend. I hope you was not air-sick in my rapid accents and descents here! The landscapes are almost identical to the real scenery here -perhaps some more trees etc.

Wow that is the next best thing to walking it, hope you where on pause while you took the screen shot.... gives us a very good look at the area its so life like.

Thanks a lot Steve. Not quite as nice as walking here but a good alternative nevertheless. On this flight, I went over the hills to see my night star shot reservoirs and other well know places to me and they were all very easily recognisable by air here. No I did not pause the simulation as that would have given me a narrower picture (as there are then a set of program drop-downs on the top of the screen which are cut down/out by the programs on-screen-printing, very clever.) Just an easy shift space-bar click for this-not as complex nor dangerous as holding a real camera in a cockpit. (I think). Hope you managed to read the addition notes on the Pip page itself.
Cheers for the call and reflections my friend, Herb

Thanks Colin. The outside is probably much clearer than they would have been in the real Piper but the cockpit is as realistic as it gets. Absolutely stunning at night over a lit city.

HERB!!! That is SO COOL!!! I loved all of your pictures. I was totally amazed at the realism, how awesome is that? And also, you remind me of my older brother's passion for flight simulators. He passed away some years ago, but I look back on times I would stand beside him and watch him land and take off and would tell me everything going on. Neat. Thank you for the memories. :)

Great to see you again Janet. Always good to see you enjoying my work so much. As you can see, here is another side of me that in a way mirrors my love for photography too. These flight simulators are not for everybody but if it gets to you, you are hooked. I have been flying these sims since the birth of home computers and was one of my great hopes in getting involved with computers -that turned into a career for me too. I can quite understand your brothers love for such flight things, and there is in fact nothing better than sharing the experience with another person, as here on Ipernity for me and with you stood besides him too. Thanks for sharing.

Best Wishes, Herb

I have never heard of a such a thing outside of flight schools!
I too had a couple of flights and was due to try for my PPL when the recession of the early 90s struck very forcibly and not only blew away my savings but the flight school / private airfield too! It is now a housing estate!
The shots you got look very realistic to me, Herb!

Herb Riddle club has replied to Andy Rodker club
Hi Andy. In that case, I am very happy that I have brought to you another facet of technology that feeds our insatiable desire to do things from our chairs , that otherwise could never be done. As said above, like you, I have flown in real life but to be at the controls of a B747,A320 or military helicopter is another thing completely. You can see that this sort of scenery adds to the depth of reality as does the even more realistic major airports with many other planes and ground vehicles moving around. As you say, like you, I may have gone further towards a PPL (I have the books) but the cost was prohibitive. If your laptop is powerful enough you could do as I did, possibly via this steam download, which is not too expensive: store.steampowered.com/app/314160/Microsoft_Flight_Simulator_X_Steam_Edition

Cheers my friend, Herb

Three superb images Herb. If you hadn't said I would have taken it for the real thing! The pictures and notes are so interesting.
Happy New Year my friend. Continue taking your amazing pictures, and I look forward to them in 2019.....Rosa.

Great to see you here again Rosa. Its a testament to the scenery makers that this is so accurately defined. As you say, especially for me flying, the scenery is accurate enough to find my way around from the air looking at real objects and landscapes that I know. Both Dovestones and Yeoman Hey really does look very much like this. Good tat you enjoyed my notes too.

I echo your sentiment re a Happy New Year and continue too, to take grand photos in 2019. Herb

I enjoyed and absorbed all the comments above Herb'... your images are fantastic...I have only played flight games very briefly .. and that was years ago... the advances in graphics are amazing... I can see myself getting one of these newer 'sims' before long.
Thanks for the info' .. Best wishes from Dave.

Hi Dave. Always good to see you looking at any of my pictures. Here is something quite different. I had thought about placing some of these on here but was instinctively against putting up 'artificial photos'. However here they are. Since you wrote here, I have put in four more photos, here as pips and open for friends and family only. I hope you get a chance to see them too. - Yes, these shots demonstration a world of difference in the flight sims that you knew. It still takes a powerful computer (yours would be ok) and at least a good flight joystick (I have a realistic flight yoke, throttle controls and rudder pedals). It only remains ten to have patience in learning new things but the rewards can be great. Note these Dovestone scenes are far more realistic than the FSX default scenery area of the same.

Good luck with all that and Best Wishes, Herb
