Bruton Dovecote

Bruton Dovecote
The Bruton Dovecote is a limestone tower that was built between the 15th and 17th century in Bruton, Somerset. The structure was once used as a dovecote, and may have been a watchtower or prospect tower prior to this. It is a Grade II* listed building and scheduled monument.

Wonderful scenery, an unusual Dove Cote the shape would make collecting the squabs difficult, no rotating ladder, also having windows. I hope that you have a good week Rosalyn

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Many windows were filled in Peter, but I am sure this started out as a look-out tower, given its height and shape. Have a good new week.

Amazing how this looks like a Scottish broch, rather than a Wessex dovecote! Lovely shot.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Andy Rodker club
Thank you Andy. Probably turned into a dovecote at a much later date. It is said that there was a building there in the 12th century.

A beautifully composed shot of this tower against a lovely sky. Scottish brochs are all round double walled structures and much older. This looks similar to pele towers. Peel towers (also spelt pele) are small fortified keeps or tower houses, built along the English and Scottish borders in the Scottish Marches and North of England, intended as watch towers where signal fires could be lit by the garrison to warn of approaching danger. They often had no windows at ground level which is different.

I have just looked up Scottish brochs Jean. Very interesting and as you say, round. I see that this is similar in shape to the Peel towers, and I feel sure, given where this tower is, on the top of a high hill, that it was originally a look-out and later changed to suit the Augustinian Priory as a dovecote. There were a few doves inside yesterday. Many thanks for your interesting and kind comments.

I HAVE SEEN ALSO BEAUTIFUL ANCIENT DOE COTES IN ENG;AND . I WAS A WAY TO KEEP ;LIVE FRESH MEAT !!!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Pam J club
This was once part of an Augustinian Priory Pam and I think they changed the use of the tower to a dovecote. As you say, they needed a good supply of fresh meat.

Quite an attractive structure.................and such an unusual history! It looks very imposing and I can how it may have been a watchtower and there's certainly going to be a cracking view from the top.

Very nicely composed and taken.

Thank you Keith. It is on a lot of the Bruton emblems and can be seen in the distance from the church picture I uploaded for HFF a couple of weeks ago. www.ipernity.com/doc/rjh/48220066

It was quite windy and a struggle to the top, but I was more or less blown back down...scarily fast ;-))

Another fine series Rosa, Was the overview of the church ad town taken from the location of the tower?

Thank you Doug. Yes it was taken from the tower. It was very windy up there as it is higher than it looks! All the best, Rosa.
