The Cobb ~ Lyme Regis

The Cobb ~ Lyme Regis
The filming for Ammonite with Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan has just finished in Lyme Regis. It is about Mary Anning (1799–1847) who was a famous English fossil hunter. The cliffs near where she lived in Dorset, are rich in fossils from the Jurassic Period. Anning spent months uncovering the body of her first fossil, a marine reptile that swam in the time of the dinosaurs. The film also follows the close relationship she formed that changed her life forever.

A fascinating place! I guess it was cordoned off when they filmed there.

They were filming all over the town as well Gudrun, so I expect each area was cordoned off when required. I didn't see any of the filming but when Far from the Madding Crowd was being filmed in Sherborne, which is near me, you would hardly have known they were filming, and though watching, I could hardly hear anything. The French Lieutenant's Woman was also filmed in part at Lyme Regis.

When they are filming for TV series in our neighbourhood they always require all the parking spaces for their vans but you never see the actual filming.

A fine image, I've heard of Mary Anning previously, so I look forward to the film.

I thought Kate Winslett might be too glamorous for the role but I see from a clip of the filming that she has been made-up to look a lot like Mary Anning, who was not at all glamorous. I look forward to seeing the film as well :)

The French Lieutenant's Woman, Meryl Streep. Nicely composed Rosalyn the Marine Aquarium wasn't there when I went. Is this on your list of places to take your play mate at Easter ???
The link that wouldn't open was the Hollies 'The air that I breathe'

My play mate was with me Peter and we did visit the Aquarium. It was very good. A shame I couldn't get the link as The Hollies are my all time favourite group. Without counting my posters and programmes, I have probably seen them about 15 times. The first time was when I was 13 and my father took us. The Kinks and The Dave Clarke Five were also on that tour. Great memories.

Another coincidence, about 1989/90 on the final night of the Hollies world tour at the Royal Albert Hall, Kay and I were there, perhaps you were as well?. apart from the song Peter mentioned as a link to your photograph, they also sang Prince's "Purple rain" and to this day it still makes me shiver when I hear it played.

I have seen them in many towns but never in London Maurice. Seeing Allan Clarke perform Purple Rain live was wonderful and a favourite of mine too. i still see them perform now with the very talented Peter Howerth
as lead singer. Of course the great Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott are still there and long time member Ray Stiles. I also saw them when the late Carl Wayne was with them. Had a front row seat that night in Torquay.

Hi Rosa,

I do like the picture, and great information about the filming too. (Although not seen the films myself).
Interestingly, the word 'Cob' is used in Welsh too. In this picture the train is about to cross the Cob at Porthmadog.. www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/46377316

Best wishes
Peter

Hi Peter,

I am pleased you like this picture. I guess cob/cobb means the same in both languages. I have been on the train in Porthmadog :)

Best wishes, Rosa.
