Norton sub Hamdon ~ Dovecote

Norton sub Hamdon ~ Dovecote
Unusual in that this dovecote is in the churchyard of St Mary's Church, Norton sub Hamdon, Somerset. It is thought that it may have been part of a former manor house estate circa 17th century.

Norton sub Hamdon ~ St Mary's Church

Showing its proximity to St Mary's church, where the former Liberal Democrat Leader, 'Paddy' Lord Ashdown was laid to rest in January this year.

Oooh, now that's much more recognisable as a dovecote! It's a really lovely shaped building with a beautiful roof and it looks really at home among the gravestones. A wonderfully detailed and clean image Rosa.

I really like the PiP too..............such gorgeous golden light contrasted with the hard shadows. The dovecote and the Church make a beautiful couple :-)

Yes you're right Keith, it is a more usual shape. I was surprised to see it in the churchyard but there is also an Old School House there as well.

Thank you for your very kind comments on both pictures. Much appreciated.

I am always fascinated by your SO old cimeteries, Rosalyn. I suppose that you can't see any name or dates on the tombs ...?
Beautiful and interesting picture !

Some stones you can read and some are partly readable Christiane. I do enjoy looking around them and quite humbling to read some of the inscriptions.
Thank you for your very kind words.

A lovely image of a 'proper' dovecote, Kinwarton is quite close to the church but not in the churchyard, there would have been a manor somewhere close because it was the fact that only the lord of the manor ate the birds although they ate everyones crops that caused trouble, I think this also happened in France

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
A very unfair period in history Peter. Maybe the French Revolution changed their minds a little!!
This is the only dovecote I have seen in a churchyard and the village is beautiful.

Fantastic photography, Rosa! Beautiful details and a super inset too. I had to look up what a dovecote was, WOW! A roosting house for pigeons. How cool!

It's always good to see something out of the archives, Rosa. Two very nice shots, and I particularly like the juxtaposition of the doocot with the church. Looks like an old postcard.
