Stonehenge around 1961

Stonehenge around 1961
For Erhard ~ Me with two of my brothers in the days when you could walk freely around the stones. I think I must have taken the PiP! ....Just looked on the back of the photo and it's 1961.

Thank you Keith. I must get myself a slide scanner as I have so many that my father took, mostly in the 60's and 70's.

That's a good idea................we found hundreds of photos when my Mother passed away and they're still in the boxes we found them in. I keep meaning to get them digitised, but never seem to get round to it.

All very smartly dressed in your Sunday Best do you remember what the camera was ? you didn't have vast amounts of visitors then I had been at work for four years then where has all that time gone? enjoy your evening should be nice in the summer house now !!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I don't remember the camera Peter, but my dad used to take wedding photo's and portraits and always printed them himself, so it must have been a good camera. I do have a photo of him with it somewhere and will dig it out when I have time. No chance of relaxing in the summerhouse at the moment, unfortunately.

Those were the days. Lovely to see. I visited much later but was still able to walk among the stones then on another visit a few years after everything had changed. I suppose one of the advantages of Callanish is that it's on an island and more difficult to get to.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
I don't know exactly when the stones were cordoned off Jean, but I think it must have been sometime in the late 70's. Have you ever been to Avebury? You can walk all around the huge circles there and it's such an interesting village. I lived 6 miles away from there for many years.

I well remember many times just pulling up onto the roadside and playing around the Stones !

I actually don't mind too much what English Heritage have done. It does keep something very special safe. They have also finally come to a good place with the people that want to be there come the Solstices.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Pam J club
There is apparently a good visitor centre but I am told it's quite expensive now. I much prefer Avebury. Last time I was there some Druids were doing their thing around a particular stone. Very interesting to watch! Yes the Solstices are much better managed now.

I went when I was last able to go Home.. that was March 2011. I also went back to Avebury (which wasnt far from where I once lived) and then to Stanton Drew. I hear you say "Where" look it up. It is THE third place.. just as important as Stonehenge and Avebury.. free and forgotten. A huge area.... The magic is still there.. and you can have the place to yourself... plus the cows in the field !

That's interesting. Where did you use to live near Avebury? I lived near Woodborough which is not far from there from 1975 until 1981. Oh yes, Stanton Drew is wonderful and a place my daughter and I are going to before the end of summer! I haven't been for many years, so will take plenty of pictures! Thank you for the links....I'm taking a look now and they are wonderful!!

Pam J club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Firstly in a little village off the Ridgeway and then in Newbury. Avebury and the Kennet Long Barrow and Wayland Smithy / Uffington White Horse etc used to be summer evening rides out and winter fun in the snow !

The whole area is converging Ley lines . I am pagan to my core !

Thanks for showing Rosa....this is one of the places, I really long to see...although it´s not possible to walk around them....I think that´s good for keeping them safe!
Great to share your memories to us ;)

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Tanja - Loughcrew club
My pleasure Tanja. I suppose it is so familiar to me that I take no notice of it now. I much prefer Avebury. There is talk about replacing the main road past the stones with a tunnel, but I think a duelled by-pass further away would be better....You know how long it takes councils and governments to decide on these things! It's only been about 30 years ;-))

Fine images from yesteryear Rosa. It must be great to have such a photographic record of childhood days. Most of our family pictures from those days were lost in one of our many house moves during my fathers service in HM forces.

Great photo of a sweet memory and fascinating place.

I got to do a drive by of Stonehenge this year on the Solstice - didn't even think about trying to park and walk up to the 'fence' around it, but the traffic was so slow I did get to enjoy it even at a distance. Interestingly we have an exact copy of Stonehenge overlooking our Columbia Gorge (It's made out of reinforced conrete because when they tried to use local stones it didn't work, but looks very much like the real thing). It's almost 100 years old now. It looks different than the original because it's made to be as it was first built - so nothing fallen down. thegorgeguide.com/stonehenge-in-washington-state

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to raingirl club
Thank you for your interesting story raingirl. They have been talking about a by-pass for at least 30 years! The latest is to build a tunnel, but there have been so many objections. I wish they would just take the dual carriageway a few miles away and it would give Stonehenge the landscape it deserves.
raingirl club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Your solution sounds best to me - move the "dual carriageway" (2 lane highway - if you were American, haha). I personally have always disliked underground roads for varying reasons, though they can be useful.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to raingirl club
It's the sensible solution. I share your dislike of underground roads.
I hope you enjoyed your visit. Best regards.
