King Alfred's Tower (1)

King Alfred's Tower (1)
King Alfred’s Tower is a 160ft (49m) high folly, designed by Henry Flitcroft for Henry Hoare II (Stourhead Estate) in 1772. It is believed to mark the site where King Alfred the Great rallied his troops in 878. The tower commemorates the accession of George III to the throne in 1760 and the end of the Seven Years War.

Thank you Doug. Not easy when you've got a dog in one hand and camera in the other and the dog keep going ;-)) Best wishes, Rosa.

Thank you Peter. This folly has been well known to me all my life. Mum and dad used to bring us kids here for a good run around! Never done the run though.

Lovely composition, Rosa. The path is a very effective lead-in line to draw the eye to the tower. Cheers, Joe

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your kind comments. The views from the top of the tower are magnificent. It used to be £1 to go up the winding, stone staircase, but that was a couple of years ago.

Best wishes, Rosa.
