Lower Backway ~ Bruton

Lower Backway ~ Bruton
007

The Packhorse Bridge also known as Bow Bridge. It is possibly 15th century and built of local stone ashlar. The bridge may have been built as a link between the former Bruton Abbey and its Court House in the High Street. On the parapet on the western side of the bridge is what remains of a carved shield from when It acquired the name Bow Bridge in 1707. Today it links Plox to Lower Backway and through alleyways up to the High Street.
