The Little Church in the Field

The Little Church in the Field
My contribution to the World Photography Day group. I have taken lots of photos of this church over the years and it remains one of my favourite places. The landscape changes throughout the year, and so do the crops planted in the field. This year it is sunflowers. The foreground gets very wet and boggy in the winter time as the rain runs off the hill towards the road.........hence the reason for the little bridge.

It is also a very peaceful place. Sometimes when I visit, I like to sit on a bench in the church grounds and just enjoy the views and the quietness.

I initially arrived here mid-morning but it was overcast and drizzling with rain. The sunflowers were all facing towards the church, which I wanted to get in the photo, so although I took some photos I was disappointed.

I revisited again later in the day when the sun was out and took this photo. Unfortunately the sunflowers were still facing in the wrong direction, but I decided this was the best I was going to get and anyway, the rain clouds were gathering again.

Out of several shots I took, this was my wife's favourite........so if you don't like it I can blame her. No pressure :-)

Please view large, on black. Thanks for looking and have a good day!

It's beautiful! The litte bridge provides an excellent leading line towards the unassuming and peaceful church and the sunflowers add a layer of lovely yellow.

Hi Keith, Isn’t it great to regularly visit the same subject and find a new perspective or different shadows. I assume the bridge is over a wet area ? Best Wishes Colin

Thanks very much Colin..........you're right of course about visiting the same subject many times, but I think I would probably visit this place even without a camera as well.

Yes you're dead right about the wet area. I did mention it in my notes :-)

How delightful, Keith. Your wife made a good choice. I agree with Colin, above, that visiting the same place regularly is both instructive and important from a photographic and creative point of view. Like others, I think the bridge adds to the picture, to its composition and its charm. Well done for your perseverance on World Photography Day.

It is good to visit a place again and again, to experience the many nuances, to feel at home with the place. Often it is only when you really feel the place and get involved with it.
I like it very much.

A beautiful field of sunflowers Keith. It looks a beautiful and peaceful place. I have never heard of Idsworth, so looked it up. A Hamlet of mediaeval Saxon origins, in the South Downs National Park in Hampshire. The church is a real beauty and the bridge is helpful over the wet patch and also adds to the picture. A very good one for WPD.

Have a good weekend.

I'm really pleased you like this one Rosa.............thank you. The Idsworth Valley is really beautiful and there is so much to see there. The church is pretty much the star of the show though!

I hope you've had a good weekend and are enjoying some cooler weather :-)

A wonderful effort from you Keith and so suitable for the World Photography Day. I had wanted to do something special myself but the after-effects of my illness still makes it all such an effort. Anyway -a grand view. Love that church and sunflowers. Very well done.

Keep safe. Happy World Photography Day!

Keith Burton club has replied to Andy Rodker club
Glad to hear it Andy.............I did walk up the hill and take some sunflower shots, but mainly close up ones (which I may post at some time). In that direction the background is awful with power lines, parked cars etc. Glad you like the shot and thank you.

Your wife takes thee credit then Keith? We can't begrudge the fact that it's raining. A lovely sunny photo fro world photography day.

Keith Burton club has replied to Amelia club
She does indeed Amelia.............I nearly always defer to her when I can't make up my mind about a photo........she has a good eye.

I'd have liked some heavier rain (for the sake of my dying garden) instead of the horrible drizzle we were getting, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

Glad you like the photo and thanks for stopping by and commenting.

What peaceful place. I think that this year's sunflower fields are an asset for the photo (even if they look towards the church). But I suppose that during the winter, this little church does not see many visitors?
Keith Burton club has replied to Christa1004 club
Thank you very much Christa. I'm glad you like it.

The church is normally open all year round during daylight hours, it seems to be mostly visited by tourists and photographers! It seems to have a regular congregation though, and it has services on Sundays and other important days in the Christian calendar, as far as I know.

Christa1004 club has replied to Keith Burton club
I meant with the allusion to winter visits of the church that the path must be quite wet and boggy (as you also wrote in your description); btw, I love this little bridge.

It is so wonderful that you photographed a location that has such nice pleasures for you - that you go back to again and again. I think that even though the sunflowers are facing away, they are facing the church building and that has its own meaning in the photo. And the bridge to nowhere (except leading towards the church) is also nice to have in the photo, it gives the photo extra balance and direction and 'food for thought'.

I wish I had a place to go and sit and be with the world. You are lucky. I hope we will see continued images from this place, your world.

Do you find certain times of year yield better photos of this place?

Happy (belated) World Photography Day!
Keith Burton club has replied to raingirl club
Thank you Laura.......I'm really pleased you like this photo. It's always been one of my favourite locations since we discovered it.

I think it always looks best in summer..........although the church itself changes very little, different crops are planted each year...........oilseed rape and wheat fields with poppies have been my favourites but this is the first year I'ver seen sunflowers. I can't wait to see what is planted next year!

I've never seen it in snow yet............we rarely get snow here.............but maybe this winter?

I haven't had time to look through all the photos in the WPD group yet........but I will get round to it soon :-)

As far as I'm concerned you have a whole year to get to them all ;-)
