Overgrown

Overgrown
Since the Covid-19 pandemic started a lot of the public footpaths in England have become overgrown and neglected through lack of use and maintenance. This one is at the top of Old Winchester Hill in Hampshire. I walked part of the way up, but decided not to continue as I was wearing shorts and was fed up getting stung by nettles. Yeah, I know, I'm a wimp :-)))

I thought it would make a decent photo though.........thanks for looking!

I was told in no uncertain terms that I should refrain from wearing shorts on my mountain walks due to the prevalence of lime disease. So I haven't worn shorts for my walks for a good 10 years and that's a nuisance in the temperatures we get in summer!
And I get my fair share of overgrown paths here too where I'm the only user (especially when the path doesn't lead to a restaurant! The Spanish don't do country walks if they can't enjoy a leisurely lunch half way along - and no; sandwiches don't cut the mustard!).
The problem with overgrown paths (apart from making close friend with nettles while wearing shorts!) is that sometimes they can be so overgrown that you can easily lose track of the correct way!
Despite that, I'm rather fond of overgrown paths such as this!

I quite agree with the good advice you've been given............in my defence I wasn't planning on walking too far from the car! Your description of the Spanish people's view of country walks made me laugh :-)))

Ironically, I've had more insect bites on my legs in the garden this past week or so that I would have had nettle stings along this footpath.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting Andy :-)

In case you hadn't guessed, Keith the advice was given by my girlfriend - a lady of infinite wisdom and common sense who I disobey at my peril!
Funnily enough she is spending July and August in Salisbury staying with a lady friend of mine from days of old for the intensive English and she is doing voluntary work at the Arundell Foundation based at Edwarth Heath's old place in the town. I'm really not too sure what her work entails but I get the occasional panicky WhatsApp about some classical music general knowledge question, or a question on what is a decent bottle of wine to buy in England or why does a cup of coffee cost so much?!!! No doubt I'll get the full story before too long!

She's a sensible lady Andy...........so make sure you do as you're told. I've survived many years of marriage by doing just that!

I bet you'll be glad when she comes home!

I agree even the tarmac covered footpath to our local park which is normally well maintained is overwhelmed by trees, shrubs and some ‘deadly’ Bramble that cuts with any contact

Most of the neglected footpaths I've seen have been on private land........which means it's the landowners who are responsible for their maintenance. To be fair they've had a lot on the plates lately and probably have much more important things to worry about!

The right decision when wearing shorts Keith. At least you got a good picture out of it, which I like very much. Thankfully, the public footpaths that I have walked in this area, have all been cleared. I have learnt the hard way that it's best to wear jeans and shoes, rather than sandals, after being stung too many times!

Indeed............in fact some people would say that with my legs I shouldn't be wearing shorts anyway :-))

Glad you like the photo Rosa........and thank you.

Keith Burton club has replied to Günter Klaus club
It's a compromise Güni..........we want people to get outside and and use the footpaths but the nettles, brambles and other trees, shrubs and undergrowth are good for the wildlife!

The footpaths don't need to be immaculate, just clear enough to allow access.

Asian mosquitos! That don't sound very nice at all..........I shall stop complaining immediately :-)

I've seen recipes for nettle soup before.............but I don't think it's for me, but thanks anyway!

Thanks for dropping by..........and have a good week yourself Jean Paul.

May I briefly interject here, Keith.
I've had nettle soup once and once only many decades ago in France. And to this day I say that it was the most delicious bowl of soup I've ever had in my life! I've looked for it ever since but never seen it. I thought about making it myself but somehow just didn't seem to get round to it and in any event they don't exist where I live now!

Keith Burton club has replied to Andy Rodker club
I've never seen it on a menu anywhere so far Andy. I could try making it myself I suppose, but I doubt I will to be honest :-)))

Schitterende opname, Keith.
Hartelijke groeten, Frans.

It looks nicely lush from a distance but I don't care about nettles either;-) They are supposed to be good against rheumatism and make a healthy tea it is said. I'm not keen on trying;-)
