Wasp

Wasp
Drinking out of one of my bird baths. I seem have lots of these in the garden this year, and they're not the Common Wasp I normally see. I think they are the species called the German Wasp - Vespula Germanica.

I think you're right with the identification Keith. I used to hate them until I learned more about wasps, and how ecologically important they are. You have focused beautifully on the wasp and water. The detail is superb.

Thanks Rosa.............thanks for the confirmation. They're new to me and quite lovely. I don't think they're nesting in the garden.........we've looked...........but they commonly nest underground, so we might not have seen a nest. We often see around half a dozen at a time mainly around the bird baths morning and evening.

Glad you like the photo............as always your comments are very kind.

Thanks Stephan............glad you like the photo. You're not alone in not liking wasps, but unless they become dangerous to me I'm happy to leave them alone.

I have 3 bird baths situated in different parts of the garden.........used mainly by birds and recently by these wasps. I haven't had a hedgehog in my garden for years........they're very much in decline in the UK. One of my neighbours has several cats.......all they seem to do is leave a smelly mess in the garden, which really annoys me.

Oh, and when we look after our daughter's dog, he ignores the fresh water we put down for him and drinks directly from the bird baths :-))

Glad you like the shot...........and have a good evening and a lovely week to come.

What a wonderful shot, Keith!! I never have thought about a wasp drinking water. I wonder if all insects do that?

Keith Burton club has replied to Eunice Perkins club
Thank you Eunice.........you're very kind. I way assume most insects drink water in some way or other. Wasps and bees are regulars on my bird baths, but I think other insect get water off leaves of plants or grass or from whatever else they eat (including other insects).

Stunning detail and true colours in a superb close up, Keith
We had to evict a couple from the house in the last few days, a nest close by I guess

Thank you Roger............glad you like it.

We rarely get them in the house. We have heavy nets on the windows and use chains on the door (a bit like the ones you see on butchers shops), which I had custom made in different coloured metal (quite expensive, but better than the ones you see with plastic strips or beads hanging down and they last forever).

I was lucky to get close enough for a shot, because it was concentrating on getting a drink. Glad you like the result Güni and thanks for your nice comments.
