Thanks, Jean. To my eyes it's the shadow that makes the shot.

The quizzical shadow stares at the drain grills - almost to the extent of taking away our attention from the dandelion-strewn l,ot, with a small accent from what looks like a discarded candy wrapper.

This kind of photo challenges the viewer to discern its inner meaning. Sometimes a cigar is just a smoke, or something like that supposedly from S. Freud.

I haven't looked up Freud's opinion of the symbolism of storm drains, Bob. No doubt he had one.

Well, I just looked it up and it is as you might expect. Ho hum. The less said about that the better.

Freud's hold on the public mind is amazing. As is his hold on the minds of psychiatrists. As most psychologists will tell you, his ideas are non-explanatory. He's old hat. An old and mouldy hat. Well, maybe some of those who stayed in the American Psychological Association when it broke up are still pushing him.

Sigmund is a good name to use when playing the Name Game:

An intriguing composition, with the shadow intruding on the drains. Best wishes for the weekend, John.

The composition is very clever. Initially the shadow seemed out of place, but when I imagined it not there, the scene seemed empty. I like the token nod to nature with the rough grass and dandelions. The discarded sweet wrapper works well in the frame as well.

What does it all mean? Not a clue! Does it matter? Not a jot!

Thank you very much, Keith. As for the meaning, there may be one, but I'm unaware of it. More about that in my reply to Steve.

The act of noticing is the art. It confers significance and feeds it back to us.

That was the, ahem, concept underlying this, Steve, and most of my photos. Or maybe -- I could be wrong.

Thanks for the neat explanation. Better than anything I have come up with.

Maybe he'll weigh in on this. I guess it would help if I read more about the act of noticing. What I have read about it seems to have told me far less than your two sentences, though.

Why don't I see things like this???? Nice one John!

Thanks, Denis. I'm new to suburbia so perhaps these things are more obvious to me. A lot less shade here than back where I lived in Toronto.

Nice one, John! There's always something to see, isn't there?
John FitzGerald club has replied to Diane Putnam club
Yes, there is, Diane. My problem is being alert enough to see it. I lived on the same block in Toronto for over 40 years but in 2019 was still noticing things there that I hadn't noticed before.
