A view from the Vermont Hotel towards All Saints Church on June 11, 2010.

I shot two views from this spot; the other is in the PiP at top left.

kiiti, Andy Rodker, Ulrich John, Fred Fouarge and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

A cracking view over the rooftops.............and sharp from front to back. I like that you've kept a couple of bits of vegetation in the frame. Nicely composed and taken John.

Great view of buildings old and new. I like the tall red chimney stacks. Imagine the amount of smoke from them in the past.

Thanks, Jean. Toronto got a lesson in the effects of smoke back when protesters against the destruction of Old City Hall washed the brick. A black building was revealed to be a mixture of appealing pinks.

It works as a composition, too. Strong verticals at left, and a few more in the distance to keep the eye from following the roof lines to the lower right too quickly. And when we get there, it's an unexpected bit of garden, with a white line moving our attention left again, a bit of a zig zag. And the sprig of green at left to keep it all from being a sterile exercise.

No, I won't apologize for that bit of pedantry.

No apology necessary, Bob. Thanks. I'd like to think I was thinking all that when I framed the picture, but since I didn't have a lot of time I probably just got lucky.

What on earth where you doing there, John! I'm glad you were because you have given us this wonderful view and shot! (I've never been to Newcastle, much to my regret!).

I was at a meeting to design a research study for a type of physical rehabilitation, Andy. It was really more interesting than it sounds.

The city centre of Newcastle is stunning. Apparently in the 19th century the city burghers decided they didn't want Newcastle to become a drab industrial city, so they all built developments in the centre that featured architecture of a very high standard. And then there are the bridges.

Now, however, I think tourists mainly go there for the big shopping mall (hmm -- same thing in Toronto).

I think people mainly come to where I live because a snowstorm has closed the highway.

Like the PiP and the view. There's a British crime show called "Vera" that we were quite fond ot. It takes place in Newcastle, but most of it is shot outside of the city, so it's nice to see this view.

Thanks, Sarah. NUT is quite the place. I haven't been back but had hoped too soon. Now I have no idea whether I will or not.
