Every time I pass this way, I'm stuck by the idea that I'm driving a smooth interstate highway at something north of 75 miles per hour through territory Custer and company took weeks to cross. This strikes me more strongly here when I see these particular road signs than almost anywhere else in the former frontier.

Maybe unintentionally, you spelled out nicely why I try to avoid driving Interstates. They feel too much like an awkward mechanized avoidance of history and culture.
