Shallowpool

08 Apr 2013 600
This two pot limekiln stands alongside the West Looe River and was working from at least the 1780s. It is shown as disused on the 1881 OS Map. When the lessee died in 1822 there was 850 tons of limestone sitting here and a further 810 tons at East and West Looe. All stone and culm for burning here had to be brought up the river by boat.

Moorswater

08 Apr 2013 2 395
A tale of two viaducts - several of the original piers from Brunel's 1859 timber decked viaduct still stand at Moorswater alongside the replacement structure of 1881. Both are listed Grade II.

Great Wood Pit

01 Apr 2013 504
The Great Wood Pit was winding coal during the early 19th century and continued in use until the closure of Denton Collieries at the end of 1929. Hidden away in woodland are the remains of the pithead with the bedstones for the drum, flywheel and crank of the beam engine winder that worked this pit.

No boats

29 Mar 2013 447
Good Friday at Bosley Locks and not a boat to be seen in the ice. This must be the first Easter that I haven't seen a boat on the move at the locks, but then the canal isn't usually frozen at Easter.

Zolder colliery remains

03 May 2011 567
Zolder was the last colliery in the Benelux countries and closed in 1992. The machine hall still has much of the machinery remaining.

Yr Eifl

16 Jun 1913 3 1078
The Yr Eifl granite quarry at Trefor opened in 1850 and closed in 1971. This incline brought stone down to Trefor pier for shipping out.

Exchange sidings

15 Mar 2013 412
AB 2274 shunting wagons at the exchange sidings behind the colliery row at Beamish. The appearance of the sun at the end of the photo charter gave some splendid opportunities to round off the day.

Hovis Mill

The Hovis Mill in Macclesfield remains a significant feature of the town even now it has been converted to apartments. This view is taken from a small illustration at the bottom of a retirement address presented to a worker at the mill in 1943. It is somewhat idealised and I certainly don't think there was that much traffic on the canal by 1943!

Weighbridge

16 Mar 2013 573
The Bishopley limestone quarries at Frosterley flourished during the nineteenth and first decades of the twentieth century. Closed by the 1940s, all that remains apart from the grassed over quarries are two massive banks of limekilns and this weighbridge building that once weighed the railway wagons into and out of the site.

Opal mining

14 Sep 2012 363
The Andamooka opal mines tend to have an air of the cottage industry about them. This is a typical shaft collar and winding apparatus and may be purchased for what will no doubt be a very reasonable sum.

Boundary marker

There are two of these boundary markers in Poynton and neither are easy to find.

Meadowbank Salt Mine No.3 shaft

Zeche Amalie

04 May 2011 424
Originally sunk in c1842 the Amalie shaft in Essen was eventually incorporated into the colliery Sälzer Amalie which finally ceased winding coal in 1966. Today the shaft is retained to service pumping arrangements for the few remaining collieries in the area.

High Greenfield

16 Mar 2013 525
Single limekiln high up above Weardale. It appears to have been working during the nineteenth century and possibly early 20th century.

Birkhill Fireclay Mine incline

06 Oct 2002 1133
Incline from the adit level up to the processing works of the Birkhill Fireclay Mine. P. & M. Hurll Ltd., a fire-brick manufacturer based at Glenboig (North Lanarkshire) acquired the Birkhill estate in 1916 and drove a series of adits on both sides of the River Avon in the 1930s. Peak production was in the 1950s and the pillar and stall workings eventually extended for around 6 miles underground in the 1970s just before the company went into liquidation in 1980.
