The Woodman

Sadly the Woodman pub on the corner of Goodson Street and Old Hall Street, Hanley, is now closed and derelict. It appears to date from the late nineteenth century.

Maerz limekilns at the Buxton Lime Industries Hindlow Quarry. The stone for burning is brought in by rail from Tunstead as quarrying has ended here.
Warren Girder
| |
I have always thought that the Brinnington railway bridge over the M60 motorway is a particularly fine structure. This Warren girder bridge is the largest single span structure of this type on British railways.
Wikipedia says: The Warren type girder combines strength with economy of materials and can therefore be relatively light. Patented in 1848 by its designers James Warren and Willoughby Theobald Monzani, its structure consists of longitudinal members joined only by angled cross-members, forming alternately inverted equilateral triangle-shaped spaces along its length, ensuring that no individual strut, beam, or tie, is subject to bending or torsional straining forces, but only to tension or compression.
Cokeries d'Anderlues

S.A. Cokeries et Houillères d'Anderlues first erected coke ovens in 1904 which were replaced by new ones in 1931. The works produced foundry coke and was one of the smallest and oldest coke by-product plants still operating in Belgium at the time of closure in November 2002.

Downy Emerald
| |
As it was nice and warm this morning we went looking for dragonflies and damselflies around Newchurch Common. The main objective was to find the Downy Emerald ( Cordulia aenea ), and there were plenty of them flying close to the Whitegate Way between Gull Pool and Shemmy Moss. One of the few that landed long enough for a photograph was this male example.

Wheal Betsy
| |
The most recent mining history at Wheal Betsy dates from 1806 with this enginehouse being erected for the Cornish pumping engine in 1868. The engine didn't work here for long as the mine closed in 1877. The mine worked lead, silver and copper.
Coal for the kiln

Crushed coal falls onto the stockpile at the Lafarge cement works at Hope. The kilns here use a mix of fuels including coal and petroleum coke.
