Eugen Degele (1834-1886); German baritone.
He started his musical career as a violinist. After a vocal training with Bayer and Diez at Munich he made his stage debut in 1853 as Riccardo in Bellini's "I Puritani". After continued studies with Rauscher at Stuttgart he was engaged at the Hoftheater von Hannover in 1856. In 1861 he was engaged at the Hofoper von Dresden where he performed very successfully until his death. His star roles were Don Giovanni, Nevers in "Les Huguenots" and a hunter in "Das Nachtlager von Granada". In 1874 he sang in Dresden at the première of Edmund Kretschmer's opera "Die Folkerung". He made guest appearances at Hamburg, Bremen, Leipzig, Breslau, Munich and Vienna. He was also a successful concert singer. At the end of the seventies his appearances became less frequent, but he sang the role of Klingsor in Wagner's "Parsifal" still in 1883 at the Bayreuth Festival. Then he had to give up his career because of a progressive disease.
On the photo he is seen as Beckmesser in Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg".
