Skelwith Falls

Skelwith Falls
A slow shutter capture of the River Brathay as it tumbles down Skelwith Falls after quite severe flooding in this area. Certainly not a spot to loose ones footing whilst taking photographs like this :) A small series of steps and an iron bridge brought me to this island that is a favourite place for selfies in the summer I gather. (A future photo for our HFF group maybe.) We are actually on our way to walk the bank of the nearby lake of Elter Water.

“Skelwith Falls (or Skelwith Force) is a picturesque, moderately sized waterfall on the River Brathay near Skelwith Bridge in the Lake District, known for being easily accessible via a short, mostly flat walk from Chesters Cafe or Skelwith Bridge, offering close-up views from riverside paths and viewpoints, making it a popular, accessible spot for families and walkers enjoying the scenery and the sound of the rushing water, especially after rain” (Google AI overview)

Certainly roaring David. This was a great waterfall to see in these conditions but unfortunately I could not explore lower on its banks. I will post another from here for a HFF day.

Yes it did feel a little dangerous here Uwe but I was on none-slip rock and there was nobody near me to slip and push me in, for as you might surmise, that would certainly have meant death. Glad you seemed to like this.

Best Wishes. Herb

Soit prudent.

Hi Pearl. I am pleased that you liked this slow shutter shot as we can see real exciting movement in the water here. This was taken hand held at 1/10th sec with my Vibration reduction lens switched to on.Longer than that, without another form of stabilization it would have been impossible. Ah the beauty of the modern day super anti-shake lenses and cameras that I don't possess. I do have a very stable tripod and even a mono-pod but it always too much trouble to walk a long distance with the tripod and the mono-pod - I sometimes find difficult to get the angles that I want. Yes, in summer in calm weather, these falls would look quite different.

Best Wishes. Herb

God to see you Gordon. I knew if you got to see this that you would like it as it is another photo that you would have taken in the same vein. It was a bit dicey to capture but I am glad I managed it.

This is a superb shot Herb........well worth risking life and limb for!

Your exposure is spot on and I love the way how you've captured the movement and power of the water. I like the rocks in the water and the surrounding landscape as well, which is really beautiful..!!

I took a few photos here, most at a faster shutter speed that gave me crisp water droplets and sharper rocks but like you, I felt that this slow shot conveyed the feel of the falls better. It was pretty wild! When I look at this, I ask myself for how much longer will I be able to risk life and camera for such shots. Great that you enjoyed it too. Thanks for the star.
