The Sky at night Aug 2021

The Sky at night Aug 2021
A rather nice and rare night showing both the waning gibbous moon and stars too. A bit of trickery had to take place here to display it like this though. Some minutes later, light cloud came again to obscure this scene. Taken from my garden.

Enjoy full size,

Thanks Steve, always nice to see you here star gazing my photos. In reality, not a patch on the simplest of yours but for us up here in starless Northern England it suffices. great that you liked it though.

A well taken lunar image, Herb. We've been very much clouded in also - isn't it good when everything comes together, as it has for you here.

Ah yes, like Steve above, it seems that you have caught the English disease of constant cr^p weather :) This done on the spur of the moment minutes before going to bed. Glad it worked out OK.

A very well taken shot Herb.............you were lucky to be able to get the stars in shot as well. It's rarely dark enough round here for that!

Nice "trickery" too..!!

Yes, As our bedroom faces NE we often see the moon rising when low clouds and rain allow, always as we are about to retire for the night. This looked quite nice and a bit more orange than shown here. These stars were above all around us too and making a very rare appearance on this rare clear balmy night. Of course this had to be two separate shots as the exposures for the moon and stars are at least 16 stops apart! What!!!!

Yep, that is what my on-line calculator told me anyway. Moon was 1/250th at f8 ISO 800 (as in daylight) and the stars were 15 full seconds @ f5.6 -ISO 1600, so no way anybody could get all of this in one exposure :)

Hi Herb
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
I have not had much success with the moon this year - too cloudy / hazy..
You did well to get this one!
Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

Hi Peter, I am fortunate as the moon often shines straight into the front of our house windows (lounge & bedroom) and so I am often aware when it is clear. that being said -it very rarely is. Sometimes it looks great but by the time I get the camera out on its tripod, clouds obscure it again. That being said - many times as I visit the loo in the early hours of the morning, the bathroom (90 deg clockwise of the front) is lit up through the frosted window with the light of the moon that must be then quite visible.

Cheers, Herb
