Lui Water

Lui Water
This wonderful river Dee tributary flows through 'Glen Lui' to the 'Linn of Dee' near Braemar. Here we see on the left side a Salmon Ladder enabling the Salmon to get up to their spawning grounds just some distance further up from here.

Another to wet your appetite Toz and in a similar vein to your waterfall photos too, I think. Just got back from a week in Devon but I shall first finish my Scottish holiday shots here before posting the new Devon lot. Cheers for the star. ~ Herb

Fantastic. It's the first time I hear from a salmon ladder.

Thanks for this visit Daniela. These man-made ladders act as small waterfalls for the salmon to jump otherwise many would perish in the attempt to jump the high and very fast falls. North America is also a place where these can be seen. We actually saw a fine one in Alaska.

A great capture Herb, I suppose really the ladder interferes with the natural selection of only the very fittest reaching the spawning ground

Thanks Peter. yes, you must be right but in this age of dwindling fish stocks I think it imperative that man can give a helping hand. It always seems such a pity that the climbing fish will perish in any event. - A wonderful river-this.

An excellent long exposure! The water in th foregorund is nicely blurred and soft but there's still detail in the falls.
I have seen salmon ladders but have never actually seen salmon using them. Wrong time of day or year, I guess.

Good that you enjoyed this Gudrun. I took a few different time settings on this but liked this the best. I thought afterwards that I should have tried some at about 1/10th of a sec.
We were once in the Trossachs and saw Salmon leaping up to the spawning grounds via a ladder and so I know they work. I think it is in Autumn when the Salmon migration run occurs.
