  • So you want to -- collimate your telescope

Collimating a reflector telescope may not be a "want to" but more of a "have to do" task to get better results. This article is a summary of my experiences and not an all-out instruction on how to handle each & every scope. If you find any mistakes or have corrections & suggestions feel free to comment or email me

  • A virtual astrophotography shopping list

I am only recommending items I think they are useful -- it doesn't mean I have purchased & tested each & every item. I will explain, why I think this is a good (or a bad/expensive) choice. Please don't take this "shopping list" too literal -- it is a list I've compiled from my own experience with the CGEM & iEQ45 and I want to point out important accessories you may miss during your 1st or 2nd round of shopping. Disclaimer : These are my personal opinions -- I have received no compensation for this blog entry

  • ~ A Message ~

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, d… (read more)

And I do not talk about some damn religious sects here! I talk about certain convenience food products and their ingredients. It was obvious that "Sausage Goulash with noodles" must taste awful and - oh big wonder! - it DID! Damn advertising gifts of the food industry. Poison that comes in little half plastic half paper and some aluminium foil cups - a chimera of the modern packagin industry.

  • The uploading continues.

I spend every second Christmas in Brussels and hope to be there next Christmas. In 2007 when I was last in Brussels I used a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 which was supposed to be a good compact digital camera. I must admit that I did not like this camera (I can't really explain why) and shortly after my return to Dublin I replaced it with a Sigma DP1 (described below). Anyway, I am now uploading the photographs in question. I should mention that the DP1 is not an easy camera to use and that people… (read more)

  • Day #85: comparing again (this time: image size limitations)

Yesterday. Yesterday I changed Preferences --> Originals & Exif --> Members or anonymous visitors from "Nothing special" to "Sharing code (+big size)". In other words: I made the "big size thumbnail" available to everyone. One effect is that the "View all sizes" link in every photo page is now enabled for everyone, so everyone can enlarge to (and download) the 1024 size. One other effect is that the Slideshow with Cooliris now shows 1024-sized instead of only 560-sized images. Why did I do… (read more)

  • Fall, Ektar, and Gimp...

After completing a major upload a few days ago, I noticed that I hadn't written a blog entry since I had had trouble with Greasemonkey. Apparently, both Greasemonkey and the Flickr to iPernity Importer now work, so that problem is solved for the moment, thanks to an upgrade to both (in addition to Firefox). Getting to the Upload, all but one of the shots in this latest upload are Czech, as my travels lately have taken me closer to my home base in Prague than in previous years. Nevertheless,… (read more)

  • Things move quickly on the internet

When I started my internet adventure a mere 4 years ago I joined 360. The only reason was I got it free with BT. I stumbled about for a couple of days worse than usless in this new world until I was rescued by Sweetie my first internet contact. From those very early days then on to Multiply and now here only Pearl from the original 6 has stayed the course and she is busy at the moment. Shortly afterwards came Jenny who has also managed to put up with me. Other than that there are only two 360ers… (read more)

  • I like modern life

I wrote yesterday about things I miss but this is not to say I do not enjoy modern life. I like waking up in a warm bedroom, gone are the days of sticking my nose out of bed to be met with an icy blast and having to prepare myself for the arctic chill in and even colder bathroom. I like coming on here after brekkie and catching up on e mails from friends, seeing instant photos of their latest adventure or family snaps. I like clicking on this site to see what you lot have been up to and rea… (read more)

  • The Final Selection

As my sixtyninth year draws to a close, I need to get a grip on my terrible habit of recklessly acquiring cameras, and even reverse the trend. We shall see!

  • So you want to be a Stargazer -- steps I would avoid & steps I suggest

The tools like Vixen POLARIE, iOptron SKYTRACKER and the ASTROTRAC all have their use and fans. And they are capable to move a small camera setup and effectively eliminate startrails. They are small and comparatively easy to use but are quite expensive for what they can do. They also have limitations and here I want to point to the benefits of a real EQ mount. Some of these mounts cost about as much as any of these devices once you add up all the costs for the additional accessories.

  • "THE TERRACES OF THE MOUNTAIN" - "NOS SOCALCOS DA SERRA"

I identify in the poems of "THE TERRACES OF THE MOUNTAIN" a terrestrial nostalgia that reminds me the poet Teixeira de PASCOAIS. The Algarvian hills may not be as high and stony as the Marão Sierra, nor the streams and hallows so fast, but the creative emotion influenced by the elements of nature is there as an unvarnished whole for the convenience of the poet living with feet on ground. Read Fernando Reis LUÍS is to have the sun, the wind, the moonlight, the rocks, the shadows and the water… (read more)

  • So you want to -- setup your new mount for the first time

Congratulations and you are going to be excited unpacking and trying it out ==> my suggestion is to READ THIS BEFORE you go and pickup the mount. And maybe also keep a few key notes on what to watch out for. Reading this will help -- READING THE USER's MANUAL also is a good idea !!
