SORRY FOR THE HORIZON, I WAS NOT INTENDING TO PUBLISH THIS NOW AND AS THE UPLOADER IS BUGGING I CAN'T CORRECT IT...
I HAVE LIVED IN SENEGAL AND GAMBIA FOR OVER ONE YEAR IN AN HUMANITARY MISSION, A BREAK FROM MY USUAL JOB. COMING BACK TO EUROPE AND TO EUROPEANS VALUES IS SOMETHING I NEVER TOTALLY RECOVERED FROM.

ROL/Photo, Erika Akire, Cämmerer zu Nau, kiiti and 33 other people have particularly liked this photo

Your reflections on living in The Gambia and Senegal made me think back about what one of my project officers in Senegal once told me about the very different concept of time in our respective cultures: "Europeans have clocks and watches; we have time."
A lovely image of Gambian river life, Isabel. It has not changed all that much in the rural areas. Just a couple of years ago, one of our local sustainable development projects in the North Bank included providing carts and donkeys so farmers could take their produce to market.

This is very true... and the clockwork way of life in Europe has always been difficult for me, in my south we are like Africans... we take our time.
In my job time was not a question of minutes, soit was fine with me.

35 years ago these people used to say: "we are sticky but not yet agressive". Hope this did not change either...

Like this very much Isabel. It’s a story. I love horses also and this lovely one us concentrating on the job with those ears and also a sweaty neck from the work. Hope there was plenty of rest and water and the end of the job.

I would have loved never to come back. But I found out I did not have the right place there, but neither anywhere, maybe only where I am, but it changed so much due to mass tourism that I really feel I don't fit in here too... fortunately Mother Nature saves me from sinking...

I tilted my laptop. So, the horizon corrected! =D

But you could also call it as an intentional Dutch angle... One can feel the speed! =)

So very, very interesting, and I understand. When you have spent time living with people who are poor and live lives so different to ours, it is very difficult to accept the empty materialism of western life. I agree fully...

David G Johnson club has replied to Diana Australis club
''Empty materialism'' is a good term to use regarding today's values.. Diana'.. Having said that, I can't relate to the mind broadening and probably wonderful experience.. as Isabel has, because .....I have only ever known a material life..
Keep well.... and good wishes to you.. from > Dj.

Xata club has replied to Diana Australis club
Indeed Diana. I was born very poor, we were as poor as those people. I was very good at school and therefore climbed in professional life, but my youth friends kept being my best friends and even if I have tasted the best money can buy... I still appreciate what is simple, am proud of my ones and live without showing off.

The horizon doesn't matter, what does is that you've managed to save this image. It reminds me of life in some countries I've visited: as Diana noted, the contrast with our empty materialist western lifestyle does indeed leave indelible images.
