Echuca Wharf

Echuca Wharf
The Murray is Australia's major inland river and was once the main inland freight route, using paddle steamers - now operating for tourists. This is the wharf at Echuca, the main port for northern Victoria, with the height of the wharf reflecting the need to continue operating at varying river levels (see also PiP). The paddle steamers had to be relatively small with shallow draft, to allow operation during drought (and even then many became stranded until rivers again rose).

Yes, there are benches on the top deck of the wharf and on the paddle steamer. Wishing everyone a Happy Bench Monday and a good week to come.

Ein tolles, nostalgisches Schiff. Schön, dass es noch fährt und der Schottische Poeth Alexander Arbuthnot hat dem Schiffsbauer damals sicher gut gefallen. HBM!

Thank you, Lothar. Actually, this ship was named after the founding owner of the sawmill that also built the ship in 1923 - the last of the paddlesteamers.

There's a distinct resemblance between the pier and the ship. There's also great tension between the grey pier and the beautiful cream of the steamer. Well spotted and captured, George.

Super shot, George. I've heard for many years now how the whole Murray River catchment area is quickly drying out leading to serious lack of water for agriculture and everything else for that matter. Perhaps my sources were being over-dramatic!

Thanks, Andy. The Murray is part of the Murray-Darling system which takes in all of inland S.E. Australia. There certainly are major problems in some parts of it due to excessive irrigation use, though probably more on the Darling River side. That said, the river system has always had some problems with occasional floods and droughts sometimes lasting years.

The main pic lcould have been taken decades ago, with the wharf looking as if it needs care and attention. In contrast the PiP looks modern and vibrant - what a wonderful pair George!

This paddle steamer seems to be in excellent condition for its age, George. PS Alexander Arbuthnot, built 1923 at Koondrook, and named after the former owner of the Arbuthnot Sawmills. It's 100years old this year.

tiabunna club has replied to Amelia club
Yes, it is indeed, Amelia. As with most of these surviving boats, it has been extensively restored over the years. It's great to see them though, especially working.
