Outrage

Outrage
Around Australia are many sites sacred to the Aboriginal people, usually meaning the details cannot be divulged to outsiders, including the "white fellers" whose ancestors arrived only in recent centuries. This site of ancient rock carvings (petroglyphs) goes by the name of Ewaninga and is in the Northern Territory. While the age and significance are secret to the Elder men of the Arrernte People, it has been estimated at between 30-40,000 years. The site is accessible for visits and is part of a Conservation Reserve run by the NT Parks and Wildlife Service.

I (and most Australians) have been horrified and outraged in recent days to read that a major mining company in Western Australia, in the course of ripping out iron ore, has destroyed two caves containing sacred sites , with archaeological evidence showing occupation going back 46,000 years. They should have been World Heritage protected. The mining company's response could be summarised as "Oops, nobody told us it was important".

Not only do Black Lives Matter, so does Black Heritage!

I imagine a lot of effort on many people's part went into making sure they didn't know it was important. Sometimes I feel ashamed to be part of the human race. And yet it was humans who created and cherished these beautiful places. Your photograph is gorgeous as is the light.

That is tragic George! I would give them oops with a huge fine! The heritage of every country matters. Thank you for the beautiful picture and the information.

I fully agree, Rosa, but unfortunately the Western Australian state laws have holes in them large enough to drive giant mining trucks through (link now in details). Hopefully this will bring some changes.

Your story draws attention to the fact that, firstly, we do not have to understand everything ... and secondly, greed for profit is much more important in our time when great cultural heritage is being destroyed

Extraordinary capture and great commentary! I share your outrage at this senseless sacrilege. Hope people divest from this mining company until they cease this irreversible destruction that smacks of outright racism towards the Aboriginal people. Stay well!

Horrible and inconceivable, not the photo, but the almost cynical remark of the mining company. Any child could have imagined that this is an important and significant cultural heritage. Thanks for sharing, George!
Stay safe and well!

The mining industry is just environmental vandalism writ large. No conscience, no morals. That Rio Tinto action was horrifying. The other appalling activity of the mining fraternity is fracking and continued fossil fuel extraction.
Our current pollies are a disgrace to encourage it all.

Oh. George. This is unbelievable! In any job site of this kind they are supposed to have a specialised inspector that checks to make sure they are not disturbing archeological sites, just like they have one for safety! They just can't get away with "ops"!!!! And you are right, behaving like black heritage does not matter is exactly the same as allowing black lives not to matter!

Went back and read the article at the link you provided. It looks like they did know and put a lot of effort into NOT telling the aboriginal owners exactly what was going to happen until it was too late. Looks like the govt. has a question or two to answer as well!

Yes, the legal powers for this rest with the State government and, though that has changed political sides over the years it seems that it suits them to leave this hollow legislation in place (the West Australian economy largely rests on the mining industry). Sadly, Annalia, it seems that dollars talk loudest!

This is just incredible! I saw a documentary about these rock carvings on German TV a few months ago and can't believe that greed has gained the upper hand again... So sad!

Hi George

Thanks very much for sharing this with us. I agree, the relics should have been left well alone.

I see no excuse for vandalism of anything (including statues.. see our news..)
Nor do I see whatever wrongs which others may have done as an excuse for public disorder, rioting, looting, etc etc as these various groups have engaged in recently.

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
