National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia's national Capital, opened in 2008 and won an architectural award in 2009. I gather it attracts about half a million visitors yearly.

Striking perspective. I see Australia doesn't have the self-esteem problem Canada does. The sign at the National Gallery in Ottawa says "National Gallery of Canada", as if some other country might have its national gallery there. I suspect it means "Only the National Gallery of Canada", but it's a brilliant piece of architecture and the collection effectively demonstrates the differences between Canadian painting and other countries'.

Sadly, the 'Concrete Brutalism' style was very favoured here in recent years, Pam. You're right though, the interior is much better.

I can like this style of architecture if I am in a certain mood and if the light is just right (therefore not often). Otherwise I find this style a bore. Fine shot though!

I wonder what these concrete blocks will look like in another 20 years? Maybe they'll look OK in Australia.

I like the building (and your photo)! The buildings you show are well designed which is more that can be said for many here in Europe;-)
