Christchurch cathedral

Christchurch cathedral
Through a viewing hole in the surrounding safety fence. Sadly, it seems likely the earthquake damage may be beyond reasonable repair. I have added the location details, it is interesting to view this area from the 'satellite' view.

Rainer Blankermann, Don Sutherland, , beverley and 5 other people have particularly liked this photo

The cathedral is a very sad sight indeed. I find the satellite view frightening because it shows the extent of the damage, nearly all of the city centre is gone:-(

That was what surprised us. At the time of the earthquake the media showed some buildings destroyed and many still standing. The media attention has moved on, but very few buildings remained viable and most had to be demolished - even more since the satellite image.

Probably the many aftershocks did further destabilize the remaining buildings. I hope once they've pulled down the lot they'll speedily rebuild the city!

Hopefully this church can be repaired. To me, although I'm not an engineer and could be wrong, it looks like with a little effort and determination, the church can be saved. Terrific documentary shot!

A rebuild may be a more viable option than repair because of as yet unseen damage, Interesting shot though George did the multi story building behind the church survive intact?.
A wonderful week end to you

Oh my, I can't imagine how this is salvageable. So sad to lose a city landmark.
