Camel racing is held annually at Easter in Forbes, where we had our old car gathering. Images in notes show the field for one of the races being led to the start past some of the rear-engined Renaults, and earlier in one of the races. View large.

Nice! Did they try using camels for desert transportation in the old days? There were 19th century experiments along that line here. Virginia City, Nevada (over the ridge to the east of my house) still has yearly camel races.

Thanks, Steve. Camels provided the main freight transport out in the Centre from about the 1860s until the 1920s, when trucks took over. Most were released and there now are millions of feral camels in our deserts, but I took this shot of a genuine working camel team "on the job" as recently as 1970!

Wow. The experiment was evidently a lot more successful in your part of the world! There were reports of feral camels as late as the early 20th century in the Mojave, but they're long gone now. The races in Virginia City are a modern revival that actually started as a joke!

In May 1975 I saw 6 camels in line being lead West a few hundred metres from the road ~50 km East of Wilcannia while driving Broken Hill to Parkes. The sun had just set and I didn't stop to attempt a photo. One of my top ten photo regrets.
