'The Flat'

'The Flat'
Captains Flat is usually known to locals simply as "The Flat". It's pretty quiet these days. Taken from near the former mine entrance (see note for old shot of miners at the entrance and the top of the shaft).

, Gillian Everett, , Annemarie and 6 other people have particularly liked this photo

o0o the picture of the miners is brilliant George ... a few stories could
be told from them I'm sure ... and now all that is left ... is what you see ...
will vegetation ever grow there again I wonder o0o

It's now over 50 years since the closure and even weeds struggle to grow there, Bev. There is no topsoil and acids leaching from the rocks. Maybe eventually (I hope so).

This is in the ranges about 60km to the SE of Canberra, Diana. It's very near the Canberra weather radar.

A place with Nature trying hard to reclaim it

Sadly the dump and run is the lot of many areas . Big money from the minerals/petroleum etc doesnt live there so they dont give a damn.

Here.. Oklahoma now has to contend with more and more 'Quakes thanks to fracking. The petro companies have called the many geologists reports lies .

Thanks, Pam. If you haven't yet seen it, check the poem Norbert added above. We mustn't get in the way of the almighty dollars, as far as some of these operators are concerned.
