Nella in the morning!

Nella in the morning!
From an old slide (and later re-copied larger - view large). The blizzard blew through the night and into next morning. When the drifting snow became less (the wind still blowing), we found the Nella Dan hard against the rocks on the shore with the engines at half speed to keep her there. During the night the wind had broken all the mooring cables and she began drifting backwards toward West Arm of the harbour. The captain drove her aground to prevent damage. (NB the tattered remains of flags). In the afternoon the wind dropped and she reversed off the rocks. She was a tough ship. Two days later, with the outgoing Mawson expedition aboard she sailed, leaving us to await her return in twelve months.

For the background on the blizzard, see my previous image (shown in clickable PiP).

Some fifty years later, a later Australian icebreaker had the same problem in a blizzard, but was blown aground on the far shore of the harbour - fortunately without major damage.

The waves look really serious! But those seamen know their stuff:-)

What looks like waves are actually the bare rock arms around the harbour, Gudrun. The current ship is now clear and heading for Australia.

The problem is that it's not a "mainstream" story, Pam - not much coverage, even here. Try this link.

Beautiful maritime image with a foggy atmosphere. Thanks for the story!

tiabunna club has replied to Rainer Blankermann club
Thank you Rainer. I should explain that this was taken on old 25 ISO film, so the foggy appearance results from a slow exposure - what appears as 'fog' is drifting snow going past at about 100km/hr.

Thanks Roger. Unfortunately so. Rrolf has added a comment with this link on my photo captioned "Out in the Southern Ocean". You can read the story here . She was a very tough old ship and, when they tried to scuttle her, it could only be done by pumping water into the holds with fire hoses, even after all the stop-cocks had been opened!

Great experience you had on those latitudes...

Losing a boat you have sailed on is like losing a person. I still feel the emotion of the news of the loss of the first tanker under my command in the Mediterranean Sea, it was sold to transport water to some Greek islands and years later it sank.
