Police Station building, Burnie

A lovely old, colonial building.

Short-tailed Shearwater

29 Mar 2023 17
Hundres of these birds returned to the top of The Nut under cover of darkness. There was just enough light in the western sky to photograph this one. It is very grainy as it was shot with the camera's maximum 120,000 ISO setting! (Canon R6)

The Australian Admiral - Vanessa itea

A rather battered example, sunning itself on the steep path up to The Nut, Stanley.

A tiny insect-eating bird, endemic to Tasmania. This one was feeding in trees by the river in Fern Glade near Burnie

Penguin

29 Mar 2023 10
The town of Penguin in northern Tasmania has a lot of penguin-themed street furniture. They also have a big penguin statue - though we were a little underwhelmed by its size I'm afraid - hence no photo.

Parrots in the town of Penguin.

Manchester??

29 Mar 2023 17
In Tasmanian supermarkets, the household goods/DIY section is labelled 'Manchester' - which is a bit weird...

We spotted it by the roadside.

Kookaburra - Loongana

Kookaburra are not native to Tasmania, but have been introduced. It is feared that they will have an adverse effect on Tasmanian lizards and other small creatures.

Superb Fairy-wren

29 Mar 2023 16
These wrens are very active and hard to photograph. This is a male - the females are brown.

Short-beaked Echidna

We found this one in woodland as we set off to climb Black Bluff near Loongana.

Paddy's Lake - Black Bluff

29 Mar 2023 15
A beautiful spot. Unfortunately it was blowing a gale on the day we were there - as you can see by the waves on this small lake!

Golden fungi

29 Mar 2023 11
Tiny, but vivid yellow fungi growing near the summit of Black Bluff mountain.

Pterygopappus lawrencei

29 Mar 2023 11
This is a very compact alpine plant, found on the tops of mountains in Tasmania. It was frequent on the top of Black Bluff. This is a close-up photo - the individual rosettes are only millimetres across!
