Piece of cake...

Piece of cake...
....or challenge too difficult. This is especially my contribution for The Sunday Challenge: Selective Color. I think it is good to have difficult challenges, and this really was one.

The most difficult part was to find a good subject for this technique. The reason why some color or colors become pointed out in the picture should somehow be obvious especially for someone who sees the picture. I don't know if that is the case here, so please give feedback.

I also had a personal challenge, to tone also the monochromatic background into something else than just black and white. I did that on GIMP, which very likely was not the best way to do this. I first had to remove all other colors but red and green on one layer. Then I had to use area selection a lot to desaturate all other parts on that layer. Then I toned another copy of the image on a different layer into blue. Finally I combined the layers using "Hue layer mode".

But surely I learned a lot of new tricks =D

Nora Caracci, Indycaver (Norm), , and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Very interesting image! What a unique idea to use a color for the monochrome part. I'm not sure that I care for the blue haze around the cake, but I like it otherwise. Very creative, Sami!

Yes, I agree, the blue background on this does not quite work =) I had a great idea of taking a picture of a house with light on one window, and then turn that into an exaggerated "warm yellowish window on blue moment". But since I had no time to hunt down subject like that, I chose this shot to practice just the idea.

The idea with the house sounds wonderful! Maybe you can do that later ?

Working on it, Chrissy =) Could, be today's shot, because I maybe have time to do that today...

Interesting shot - I would be tempted to take it to PicMonkey which you can on iPernity, then completely turn it to black and white ( one click) and paint in the tongue and ears. - That would take care of the selective bit, however, your actual shot with the hand and the two pictures is fascinating!!

Thank you for feedbackk Paul =) Yes, I know that can be done, and have done so on PicMonkey once. So, the technique there is familiar. But as said, I wanted to try changing the background into some very strong color. Unfortunately the choice of subject was not very good for this.

P.S: Oh, you are absolutely right after all! Now I found you can do the same at least with sepia editing. Looking for if there's option for other monochromatic colors on PicMonkey and then an option to add full colors on selected areas. Definitely much more easier than on GIMP! =D

I like the blue color. It looks as if the picture was taken on a big party.

Nicely done, but the blue is somehow too striking, takes too much attention

What a lot of work you definitely need cake or a medal at the least. I don't care for the blue but I love the extra shot of the scene in the in hand camera. Very clever indeed!

Yes, the idea to shoot a person taking a picture with cell phone was fun. Ii only wish I would have taken it just seconds before when the cake was also lit by the LED fired by that phone =D

Very clever approach Sami and well exercised, but for me the blue is overpowering and kind of takes away from the selective colouring on the cake. Nice work though and as others have said if you don't try you don't learn! :)

What a lot of work, I don't have the patience for all that you went through. As the others have said, you have to try the "what if" thoughts or you don't get a chance to be creative. :)

And I'm kind of happy for overdoing this with the blue. I got plenty of wonderful feedback and ideas for the future =)

I prefer the inset PicMonkey version. The blues are a bit too overpowering. Love Mickey's face and the red and green :-)

Thank you Gillian =) On that PicMonkey version I picked the blue tone from a blue rag seen on the table ;-)
