Philipps House ~ Dinton

Philipps House ~ Dinton
Previously named Dinton House, an early 19th century Neo-Grecian country house overlooking the Nadder valley, 8 miles west of Salisbury, Wiltshire. The house was built in 1816 by William Wyndham to the designs of Sir Jeffry Wyatville, replacing a 17th-century house. In 1916 the estate was bought by Bertram Philipps, who renamed the house after himself, then in 1943 gave the house and grounds to the National Trust. The house and its parkland, known as Dinton Park, are Grade II* listed. The house is built of Chilmark stone, a local stone also used for Salisbury Cathedral.

Yes, very fashionable in its time Nouchet. Once built they were expensive to maintain as the years passed by. That is probably why the National Trust own most of them now....and we can all visit them!
Thank you for your kind comments & good evening my friend.

It's a big old lump of a building and I have to say that it's not the most attractive NT trust place I've seen..........from the outside anyway...........but you've captured it very well and showed how imposing it is!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a great week ahead!
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
I think you are right Keith. It doesn't have those extensive and beautiful gardens. For many years it was leased to the YMCA and it was also an artists' retreat. When neither could afford the peppercorn rent anymore, the NT carried out extensive interior work and it is now privately leased, on the condition it is open to the public at certain times.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. Beautiful weather here today, thank goodness!

Lovely weathered stonework, although these country houses were built to impress and show wealth the exterior design was quite basic even then you followed the fashion some put a couple of statues on the roof. I hope you are having a pleasant weekend Rosalyn the promised rain arrived about 11.00 it was still raining when I drew the curtains

Buen domingo, Rosa.

As Nick says in the next comment, it is amazing how many stately homes, such as this that there are around the country. I think it was when the aristocrats began to travel around Europe that they had grand ideas for their homes. Many thanks for your kind comments.

Yes you need deep pockets to own and maintain such a building, it always amazes me how many of them there are dotted around the country ~ The National Trust has its hands full. You have caught it nicely Rosa

Yes I see what you mean George. I don't think they will do much to the parkland around the house, but after the 18 months we have had, I think they are well behind with upkeep on many of their properties. Many thanks for your kind and interesting comments.

Not the most elegant building perhaps, but certainly an imposing one. You have captured in very well in this series Rosa. The light picks out the detail of the not so ornate architecture very well, maybe simple is best sometimes!
