Alone.....for now!

Alone.....for now!
This girl was happily going up and down this stretch of the River Stour, when suddenly a swan few in, straight at her, and hunted her out of the river very aggressively. He must have been protecting a nest, but we couldn't see one. It was probably the other side of the bridge. Once she was out of the water the swan ruffled his feathers, made sure she didn't get back in, and flew away!

A beautiful riparian series, Rosa. The reflection in the top photograph is quite magical. Looks like the canoeist had a lucky escape. Cheers, Joe

You were quick off the mark Joe :) I think it's called a body board. Yes she was shaken and her friend had to hold the disgruntled swan back for her to escape! There were two elderly men watching and I think it made their day!! Cheers, Rosa.

Well, that's a day she'll never forget..!! As I expect you know, swans can be very territorial, especially where their nests or young are concerned.

I think she's very lucky she didn't end up swimming - especially as she's not dressed for cold water and not wearing a life jacket..!!

You've captured her adventures very well Rosa...........right place, right time.........and with a camera to hand. Well done :-)

Yes they are in nesting season Keith. I was chased by one along a canal once when I was walking my dog....it wasn't a pretty sight ;-))

The river is not deep along this stretch, but you're quite right. I wish I had caught the swan flying in at her Keith. That would have been a terrific shot!! In my defense, I was eating a cake at the time ;o)

A great set of images Rosalyn, not something to argue with he obviously didn't like her on his water I wonder if the white dress had anything to do with it. I hope you have had a pleasant Easter Sunday

It happened to me yesterday with some geese, a lot of hissing and tongue poking, I just kept moving without looking back. Upsetting swans is always your fault, they are doing what nature intended and that is defending their partner and nest. They are game for a fight so don't go doing stupid things like hitting them with boat paddles. 3rd PIP look at the swan and see how rattled it is.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to HappySnapper
It flew in from nowhere, but the nest must have been hidden somewhere nearby. She didn't hit or even touch the swan with the oar. Just used it to hopefully keep it back so that her friend could climb out. It pays to be aware at nesting time.

What a wonderful series of shots Rosalyn. You did so well to capture the incident. I remember a swan flying straight at Veda and I once when we were walking round Birnie. She had her dog with her and I think that was what triggered it. It probably had a nest nearby and was just warning us off.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
Thank you Jean. They don't like dogs in nesting season. I had to pick my poodle up and run when that happened to us.

Like Maurice, I've had more unnerving incdidents with geese but I bet swans would be quite a handful if crossed!

Yes, we thought she was rather underdressed ;-) Once the girl was out of the water, and the swan calmed down, I managed to get a few nice shots of it. Many thanks for your kind comments.

What a story , dear Rosa!
How clever of you to tell this young lady misadventure with this series of fine shots, the first of which is my favourite...a beautiful report indeed!
I experienced myself how territorial swans can be, especially in spring time I guess.... I had literally to run away, as I got too close... to take a pic!
Congrats my friend and enjoy your evening

Thank you for your kind and generous comments dear Adele. Spring is the time to watch out for them, as they are very protective. I always remember picking up my little dog and running away from a swan that took exception to my poodle :-)

Hi Rosa
A very nice sequence picture, which I like very much!
Wonderful and interesting story
I think you must be right about the nest,, The swans in our village have rebuilt their nest from last year, and are now sitting on some eggs. Last year they hatched at the end of April, but in fairness to the swans, they have been very peaceful to us villagers!

Best Wishes, a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!
Peter

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter_Private_Box club
Hi Peter,
I am pleased you like the series. Swan nests are huge, so I am surprised that I didn't see it, but it must have been close by for the male to be so angry. I remember your swan pictures with their young from last year. I hope you get more this year. I shall try!
Best wishes & good new week,
Rosa.

A fascinating series, Rosa. I've seen geese being territorial (we had some) but I've not seen a swan do that. I rather like the last image with the paddle being poked at it. :-)

Thank you George. Oh yes, I have also been chased by geese ;-) The girl with the paddle was assuring me that she wasn't hitting the swan, but I could see that she wasn't. Her friend must have been grateful that she was there ;)

They are very protective when nesting Gunter. I was once chased by a swan when I walked past its nest by the canal. I think it was my dog that they didn't like, but she ran faster than me ;-) Thank you for your kind comments.
