Old Chapel now Restaurant ~ Shaftesbury

Old Chapel now Restaurant ~ Shaftesbury
I was going to title it "Food to Die For" but thought better of it :) This is normally a very popular and busy Italian Restaurant called San Tonino. I hope they are able to reopen soon. The side path is a shortcut to the car park.

Günter Klaus, Istvan Farkas, Frans Schols, Dida From Augsburg and 30 other people have particularly liked this photo

LOL Rosa :))) It might have been a grave mistake :~)

I seem to remember eating here once with other members of my family on one my rare trips home. It was good.

Haha, very good Nick! Yes it's a very good restaurant. I wish they would take down that net curtain though...I will have to mention it :-)

Looks quite incongruous, Rosa, having a restaurant in a building like this. You have photographed it well with the gravestones providing the ideal foreground interest. Cheers, Joe

It looks very different at the back Joe, with a nice terrace. They used to have a much smaller restaurant, but grew in popularity, hence the move. There are some very interesting gravestones, in remarkably good condition for their age. Cheers, Rosa.

Superbe prise ... Un restaurant a proximité d'un cimetière ne peut être que paisible et inspirant.. Je vous souhaite une agréable journée salutaire.

Tout de même surprenant, en France il y a aussi des chapelles et des églises qui sont vendues et complétement transformées !
Bel après-midi Rosa.

Yes, it's quite common here too Jocelyne. More the small chapels than the churches.
Happy Wednesday.

What an odd choice of building for a restaurant.......but I guess that's partly why it's so popular. I find myself wondering what it's like inside.

As a photographic subject it's quite lovely.............I like the stonework, especially the large columns and I suppose the gravestones make an interesting if slightly ghoulish foreground.

A cracking capture Rosa!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It's very nice inside Keith and has a small terrace at the back. I can recommend the food and they are charming :-) The gravestones are in good condition for their age.

Thanks for your great comments and wish you a good evening.

Buen jueves Rosa.

Thank you for finding the mountain Jose Manuel ;-) It happens to me with some people, including Andy and Doug. Thank you for your kind comments on this picture. The path at the side leads to the town car park, so I passed this restaurant often. Wishing you a good Thursday also.

An imaginative use for the chapel much better than a ruin. A list of 49 at risk historic buildings in Leicestershire has just been published 41 of them are churches. Not that the list does any good the magnificent Bradgate House Stable Block a couple of miles from me has been on it for years at one time it was the top of English Heritage's at risk list it just gets worse the aggregate company that owns it probably hope it will fall down completely

There are a few at risk buildings around here Peter. My daughter writes for The Somerset Vernacular buildings Group and they are very good at keeping an eye on things!
Take care and have a good Thursday.

It's a beautiful building and good that it is being reused. I too would have been tempted to call it "Food to Die For" It does sound a lovely place to eat. I'm all for buildings having fresh purposes and not being lost. Part of the old Town House in Falkland is now a delicatessan, three churches nearby are now houses and the old thread factory up the road is now flats.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
Thank you Jean. Re-purposing buildings does save them, but it is a shame that so many industries are lost. A sign of the times I suppose, when things can be made cheaper elsewhere!
Take care and have a good Thursday.

A fabulous photo and building! I like that the old chapels are being repurposed but I guess the high ceilings make for steep heating bills;-)
