Former Almshouses ~ Zeals, Wiltshire.

Former Almshouses ~ Zeals, Wiltshire.
In 1865 William Chafyn Grove of Zeals House provided four almshouses in Flemish bond brick on a stone rubble plinth. An inscription tablet records their foundation in memory of his mother. The almshouses are now 1,2,3, and 4 Chafyn Grove Cottages.

The angle from which you have photographed the alms-houses, Rosa, makes an excellent perspective. There are lots of great textures in the brickwork. The style of architecture is reassuringly old fashioned. Cheers, Joe

The various building materials have weathered nicely over the passing years, I wonder how many lived there when they were new, certainly easier on the eye than the monstrosity being built across the road from me !! I hope you have a nice day Rosalyn. it's cloudy but mild

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Yes it has weathered very nicely Peter. It is kept up together very well. Joined on, to the left is the village hall, which can be seen in the 2nd picture.
Same weather here! Have a nice day.

Victorian almshouses...they look so beautiful and interesting, dear Rosa, with their huge chimneys and lovely brickwork . You captured them so well and gave us great information as always . Thank you for sharing all this!
Do take care my friend and have a nice evening.

Almshouses are so interesting Adele. It was a good start at making sure elderly people were cared for. It is good to see their design was carefully thought out as well. I have photographed so many, I should make an album of them ;-))
Thank you for your lovely comments. I wish you a good evening my friend.

Really fine shots of these wonderful almshouses Rosa. When you consider that they were built for the benefit of the poor and less fortunate of a community the quality of the materials used and care that went into both the construction and architectural detail is really quite astounding. It is perhaps a lesson for us today when you consider the poor quality of much of the housing in the UK at present.

Enjoy your evening, Doug
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Certainly a lot of care and attention was given to their construction and materials Doug. I have never seen almshouses that I have not liked! Foster's Almshouses in Bristol, near Christmas Steps is beautiful. I want to get a picture of that when we can travel again! Sadly today's houses leave a lot to be desired.

Good evening & take care,
Rosa.

A delightful set of photos Rosa...............probably looking as good today as they ever did. I'm guessing they're currently listed buildings. Beautifully composed and taken!

I think Doug has a good point about quality and workmanship.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thank you very much Keith. I can remember them being "done up" in the late 1960's and they have been well cared for ever since. Yes, I feel certain they are listed.
Doug does indeed have a point :(

Take care and have a good evening.

A beautiful building. The chimneys are amazing. Most almshouses seem to have been built to a really good standard. There are some lovely ones in Appleby

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Jean
Thank you Jean. I had to look the Appleby almshouses up of course :) They are lovely, as you say. I like the courtyard very much. I must get my photos sorted, as I have many almshouse pictures and it would be good to put them all in a separate folder.

Both the church and the almshouses are remarkable buildings and beautifully presented by you! Zeals seems an uncommon place name...

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
Zeals is a very pretty village Gudrun. Apparently it is old English for "The sallow trees". Originally "Seles" in 1176. The spellings change a lot over the years. I read this in my trusty Dictionary of British Place Names :-))
