South Somerset from Ham Hill

South Somerset from Ham Hill

This circle was built by the Millenium Project to commemorate the centuries of quarrying on Ham Hill and the stonemasons that worked here. The fifteen stones are all of the local "hamstone".

Erich

Thank you very much for your kind comments Erich. There are many cider apple orchards in the area and a vineyard. There is still a small quarry on the site and all the surrounding villages are built from this mellow stone.

All the best,
Rosa.

Three stunning images Rosa!

The main picture is beautifully composed - I especially like the way the autumn sunshine has brought out the lovely colours of the landscape, particularly in the patchwork of fields. I also like the beginnings of autumn colours in the foreground.

In your first PiP I also like the composition, especially the people in shot for scale. The colour of the standing stones and the grasses are wonderfully vibrant and all topped of with a gorgeous sky.

In your second PiP the monument looks lovely against the sky. The red of the poppy wreaths at its foot really catch the eye!

Just a hint of autumn about! There are many fields of cider apple trees just out of view!

I was pleased to see the poppy wreaths still in place. It will soon be time to replace them. They were well held down....it is always quite windy at the top!!

An outstanding trio of shots. Keith has said it all. I love the way the town nestles in a gentle hollow among the harvest fields. The standing stones are such beautiful shapes and colour and the memorial with its wreaths so poignant.

My brother and I had a trip out around the honey stoned villages of South Somerset in search of where my great gran was born Jean. It was a last minute decision to climb Ham Hill, so I am very happy that you like the three shots, thank you.

Thank you very much for your kind comments John. I studied the main shot quite a long time myself! There is a vineyard in the area and I think one field shows the newer vines....but I'm not sure ;-))

A splendid capture of the beauty of rural Somerset in the main image Rosa, a part of the country I have never had the pleasure of visiting. I like very much the second picture with those wonderful stones occupying the foreground, leading the eye nicely to the hill and monument. The monument as shown in your third picture is impressive in its height and condition, the presence of the wreaths testifying to the care given by local people.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Thank you for your very kind comments Doug. People tend to pass this part of Somerset by, on their way to Devon and Cornwall. The area above is full of villages with the mellow hamstone from this former quarry. I am actually there again tomorrow with my family!

Best wishes and have a good weekend. Rosa.
