Drum on HMS Victory

Drum on HMS Victory
The drum was used as a signalling device to relay orders to troops on ships and on the battlefield. This was the case for many years within the British Army & Royal Navy until it was replaced in around the 1850's by the Bugle. On the 14th September 1805 Admiral Lord Nelson set sail from Portsmouth on board HMS Victory to engage in a battle with the combined French & Spanish fleet. On the 21st October the famous Battle of Trafalgar took place in which two Royal Marine Drummers were on board the Victory, they were Drummers (James) Long & (James) Berry. Both of these were 21 years old. Drummer Berry lost his life at Trafalgar. There was also a Royal Marine Trumpeter on board at that time by the name of Phineas Beard who was 23 years of age.

Very nice images and good information Rosa, loss of life through war is so sad particularly at such young ages.

Thank you Roger. Life seemed very cheap in those days.

This is a very poignant image Rosa..............life onboard a warship was very hard in those days and many men died in action, and lots of them were very young. It's good that their names are recorded and remembered. Very nicely captured.

Two cracking shots in the PiPs as well.........both sharp and detailed with lovely colours!

Excellent work!

Yes, so many men lost Keith. In the Mary Rose museum they had built up faces of archers and others, from their skeletons. When you see a face from that time, it really makes you think :(

Thank you for your very kind comments and interest.

Three superb shots. The one of the drum is especially poignant. When you think of all the young lives ended in war it makes you want to weep for what was lost.

Thank you Jean. Just walking around the ship, which is small against today's standards, you can feel the history. On the lowest deck, I couldn't even stand up straight for much of it, and I'm 5'3".

The great man was born here in Norfolk at Burnham Thorpe, Much of the county is sub titled "Nelsons County" yet very little to celebrate his life happens here. and to think this man changed the course of British History.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
A good point Peter. Still far too young to die though, poor boys. I cannot imagine what it must have been like with such a high chance of dying doing your job! Thank you for your kind comments.

Hi Rosa,

Great series of pictures, and great information too. At first sight I thought of the drummer in 'Ben Hur', and slaves rowing 50 to the dozen..
But, I suppose (more seriously) being the drummer would suit a young boy until he became big enough and strong enough (and knowledgeable enough) to do some of the more strenuous tasks like unfurling the sails,,etc

Best wishes
Peter

Hi Peter,

I don't think the poor drummer boys had much chance of becoming older and stronger. Walking around HMS Victory you could feel the history. I am glad I was not around back in those days.
Thank you for your great comments.

Best wishes, Rosa.

Fantastic pictures and great information too! I had no idea that drums were the first way used to rally the troops, though it makes sense, of course. Thanks for the super presentation, you always do such a nice job. :)

Your images are all so nice , but my favourite is the one of the drum. As written before, it reminds us of the horror of any war... of the loss of so many lives.
Thank you for sharing these pictures and such precious information, Rosa.

Thank you Adele. I thought the drum was the most poignant. There never seems to be an end to wars unfortunately.
