Minterne Magna Church.

Minterne Magna Church.
Most people come to the village to visit the exotic gardens surrounding Minterne House. Standing beside the drive to the mansion is the pretty country church of St Andrew. There was a Saxon church on this site, and parts of that early building have been incorporated into the present chancel. The nave and chancel were rebuilt in the 15th century in a mix of rubble and flint dressed with Ham Hill stone. Around 1610 the north chapel was added, replacing an earlier medieval chapel. Unusually, the main doorway is in the west face of the tower and opens directly onto the road.

A very attractive village church, unusual to have the entrance through the tower I expect when it was built it would have been a narrow lane or perhaps just a path to the church

I'm sure you're right Peter. The tower seems to be at a slight angle to the rest of the church. You can see more clearly in the main picture.

I admired the style of this ancient church (not common in my country, of course ....).
A splendid image, well composed and exposed.
By your photos, I go on visiting the wonderful english countryside and realizing the differences with the italian one.
All the best

Thank you for your kind comments Fabio. Seeing the differences in our countries and learning about them is what I like about this site and what I liked about Pano. I have even visited countries after seeing the photographs, more on Pano than Ipernity, but in time I will put that right I am sure. Which reminds me that my passport has run out!! The new dreaded photo must be taken!!
All the best, Rosa.

Lovely light and shadows! Entering a church through the tower is very unusual indeed!

I didn't go inside but I think it may have another door somewhere that they use now.
