Former Grammar School Wall

Former Grammar School Wall
Stone mason needed ...

HFGSWW to all, hope your week is going well and not crumbling to dust as above!!

Info;

Broad Street, Somerton, is the site of the old grammar school. The Free School of Somerton dates back to 1675, but didn’t move to this site until 1830. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Boys Grammar School suffered from mismanagement and corruption, with rumours of accounts being altered and money going missing. Consequently the school failed to perform as well as it should and it was no surprise when it was announced that it was to merge. From 1940 the school only taught 7 to 11 year olds, when the children then went to either the comprehensive in Huish Episcopi or to other grammar or technical schools. In 1965 it moved premises and merged with the girls’ school to become Monteclefe Junior School which in 2012 converted to an academy school and became known as King Ina Academy.
The old building was then developed and turned into Wessex Youth Club. In 1998 the building was again completely renovated and renamed ‘Wessex Rooms’. It is still the home of the youth club.

Beautiful. It might need a little work but I do hope it is preserved Maggs.
My old school, Bridgwater Grammar School for Girls is now a housing complex, - of vey nice housing but a little sad that all trace of it has gone.

Interesting history in your notes

Well, I think the crumbling bits can be excused given the age and history of the building!

This is a fabulous "detail" shot...............I love all the different textures and the colours are lovely. Beautifully captured Maggie with an interesting narrative.
