Dalmation Pelican (+ PiP)

Dalmation Pelican (+ PiP)
Another image of one of the pelicans at WWT Arundel plus another in the PiP.

The pelicans have their flight feathers trimmed annually to prevent them from flying off. This seems cruel but this species of pelican has declined greatly over the past 100 years. The most likely reason is habitat loss due to human activities such as the drainage of wetlands and land development. These ones are part of conservation efforts taking part throughout Europe.

Two great shots Keith. It shows the clips wings well in the main shot, which is beautifully framed, and a terrific PiP!! It shows the lovely pattern on the beak very well, especially against the blurred background. We used to clip one wing of our chickens, so that they stayed put. We only had 5!

The main image is of enormous beauty and elegance!
The PIP allows to see all the beauty of the neck and profile and the singularities of the beak!
Two fascinating captures, Keith!!!

Beautiful light and a superb capture of this large bird Keith, Are they fed at Arundel or are able to find enough food naturally?
Goodnes the pip is a real beauty love the pose and the perfect focus,

Thank you Roger. The birds are captive in the WWT site and of course are fed all the correct food. The idea is that eventually (in this safe environment) these will breed and the young will be returned to the wild to perpetuate the species.

A splendid capture Keith but the PiP out-shines this main photo by a mile with that soft background. ⭐ Very well done.

Have a great week. Herb

It's not the best of the WWT sites in my opinion, but still worth a day out! Take a picnic though If you're staying the day.........the café is very expensive and doesn't usually have much choice.

What a sad story Jean Paul.........but you did very well to rescue, treat and eventually release one of the birds back into the wild, so well done for that!

I like to think that people's attitudes have changed since that happened.

Thank you aNNa. These are elegant and beautiful birds, but they are unable to fly at the moment. Maybe one day, when their breeding days are over.................

WHAT A BEAUTY!!!! Love the details and your portrait shot is FABULOUS!! That reminds me of a picture I got on our trip! Steve laughed so hard when I told him a group of pelicans is called a "flotilla of pelicans" and used the term whenever possible! :D Here's a link to my photo album on Google, as I haven't posted here: Flotilla of Pelicans at Fish Lake, Oregon

Thanks Janet.............you're very kind. That's a beautiful image in the link and having seen it, it's easy to see why the collective noun is a "flotilla".
