Try as I might (on two different days), I couldn't get a decent shot of one of these with their wings open.

Colin Ashcroft, Nouchetdu38, Aschi "Freestone", Horizon 36 and 18 other people have particularly liked this photo

Yes Keith, some are very idiosyncratic and open the wings only to fly.
So I'll give you one of me... \_(シ)_/

It can be quiet a challenge Keith, they have this habit of turning toward the camera as you take aim and then only momentarily open and close their wings not leaving enough reaction time. The underside is attractive enough in detail albeit drab in colour. All the necessary elements are here though especially that long Proboscis taking up the flowers nectar

The two shots you have managed to get are stunning Keith with beautiful detail of the butterfly and flowers. It is amazing, the difference between the colourful open wings and the rather drab underside. The Peacock Butterfly is my favourite but have seen very few this year.

I swear they do it on purpose to tantalise. I had one land on my hand today, wings open, while I was photographing another who wasn’t obliging. I like the rich dark brown of the underside though. It looks lovely and velvety and I always love to see them sipping through their long proboscis.
