really, this has HDR treatment? I am trying to 'go the hard way' rather than a processing thing.. does that make any sense at all?

Yes ... I use just enough HDR to make the reflections pop and that's about it. Sometimes ... I'll use it with an image that is a little soft to add definition. My feeling with HDR is that less is more.
