A lonely lunch. This really shows how parts of a big city can be rather inhumane. Good, direct volumes and good eye-leaders in the cobblestones and the ridges under the overpass, not to mention the zig-zag wall at the right.

Thanks, Bob. This is a phenomenon we've discussed before. This is Nathan Phillips Square, site of New City Hall. Too much concrete, but people love to congregate here. I believe you mentioned a similar spot in Minneapolis.

This fellow seems to have chosen a quiet spot away from the crowd, although there were several passersby while I took my shots.

John, actually the spot I mentioned was in downtown Saint Louis. Ugly, almost squat concrete columns holding up an iron roof to a plaza, a concrete waterfall/pool, and a tourist center kiosk in the style of a small concrete outhouse. People congregated there, waded in the pool, ate sack lunches, bought ice cream from a shop across the street that had the ambition to open up a counter to the outdoors for service without having to go inside, and bicycle messengers played hacky sack while waiting for assignments meant to collide with pedestrians on the surrounding sidewalks. Sorry about waxing poetic.

Some interesting shapes and textures in this image............I especially like the cobblestones in the foreground. The silhouetted person is particularly good..!!

Thanks, Keith. I tried the shot without the cobbles, but it didn't work. I have an old shot of silhouettes at another part of the site that I may post.

Classic "concrete brutalism" architecture, well broken by the silhouette.

Thanks, George. The site is almost entirely concrete. nevertheless, people flock there.

Looks cool and shady...

That may be part of the appeal to people, Denis. In summer the seats under the walkway (which is what's overhead, and which goes around three sides of the site) are all taken.

Interesting the different responses this image evokes. My first impression was that he was up to no good (sign of the times, or perhaps just the fact that he shows up as a black shadow, like in a pulp novel.)

Thanks, Will. I'm keen on bands in other people's photos but it never struck me that this was a banded composition. Thanks again for helping me understand this better.
