Cape Blanco lighthouse (#1075)

Cape Blanco lighthouse (#1075)
Cape Blanco lighthouse, access to the park was free, access to the lighthouse was only $2. I was surprised to discover that most Oregon state parks are free or close to free. California state parks are typically $8 to $10, which isn't much, but enough to always make me wonder if it's going to be worth it.

Oregon really surprised me at how invested in their state parks they tend to be, and they have about a half million of them. Illinois doesn't charge an entrance fee to its state parks, either, but we're also very resistant to funding them any other way. I wouldn't mind a fee of 5 or 10 dollars if it meant we sank a little money into upkeep.

You're right, I should have mentioned that they're also well-maintained and well-signed. It's an area where California is not doing particularly well.

But at least back in the day _camping_ at a state park was not free--and was high by the standards of the time!

I didn't want to add camping fees to the equation -- they've gotten to be fairly high in many of the Ca State Parks. Over $30 for camping when camping alone just doesn't feel right :)
