I had not really visited Tyneside before only passing through Newcastle on trains and coaches heading to Scotland. At the end of May 2018 I decided to have a couple of nights in the city and explore the area and see the buses. The tower of the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas stands beyond the arch of the bridge which carries northbound trains out of Newcastle Central railway station.

Saturday 2 June 2018 (0930) – Go North East 6326 (NK67 GNP), a Wrightbus Streetdeck new in December 2017, seen about to cross the High Level Bridge linking Newcastle-upon-Tyne with Gateshead when working ‘Angel’ service 21 to Chester-le-Street. The bridge was opened by Queen Victoria in 1849 and carries railway tracks on the upper level which can be seen above right emerging from Newcastle Central Station. The lower level features pedestrian paths either side of a roadway now restricted to use by local buses and taxis travelling southbound only. When constructed the roadway was adequate for two way carriage and cart traffic. In the background is the Tyne Bridge, the road bridge opened by King George V and Queen Mary in October 1928.

Thursday 31 May 2018 (1935) – A Go North East Wrightbus Streetdeck in the green livery for the ‘Angel’ service 21 seen crossing the Tyne Bridge heading into Newcastle from Gateshead. The bridge was opened by King George V and Queen Mary in October 1928 and has become a defining symbol of Tyneside. In the background can be seen two more recent constructions, the Millenium pedestrian and cycle bridge and the Sage culture and concert venue. Between them is the former Baltic Flour Mill opened in 1950 by Joseph Rank Limited which is now the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
