Great Expectations - But Hard Times! (PiP) HBM

Great Expectations - But Hard Times! (PiP) HBM
Wigtown is known as Scotland's National Book Town and has many second hand book stores with cafes and restaurants also selling books. An annual book festival is held here. The books in this dispaly were originally real books, but in the PiP from this year they look to have been replaced with carved books. It is a shame to see how the store seems to have deteriorated and has hardly any books in the window display. The store prides itself on being 'the largest in Scotland'. A huge expectation but it seems to have fallen on hard times. I have added a song from a singer whose stage name was 'Charles Dickens', as of course both the books int the title were written by Charles Dickens.

Wigtown is in Wigtownshire, part of the Dumfries and Galloway district of Scotland and is a pleasant place to visit with a central park and very wide main street as well as a variety of small shops.

The link is 'The Way Love Goes' by Charles Dickens

www.youtube.com/watch?v=De0hcdFABa0

Charles Dickens' real name is David Anthony and he toured with the Rolling Stones in 1965. After a brief career as a singer he returned to his original career as a photographer

Thank you very much Roger. It was very quiet that day. I am hoping the lack of books in the window means they have sold a lot of their stock but I am not sure that is the case.

Thank you Guni. I hope the lack of books in the window means they have sold a lot of stock but I guess they have suffered in more ways than one, - covid restrictions would have lost them business as would the trend towards ereaders A shame as there is room for both in this world.
Times are hard though so we may see a resurgence of interest in books

Thank you very much George. Sadly you are right, - the majority have little monetary value but to a book lover each find it a little treasure! Even in a dedicated book town I wouldn't imagine there is a lot of money to be made and suspect for many it is more a labour of love than to make a profit. Ereaders. kindle etc have become the norm for many, and I get that you can read at night with no bedside lamp, you don't lose your page and you can carry a bookcase with you in your bag and you can adjust the print size which is good for old or tired eyes. They have their place but there are still a lot of people who love the feel of a real book, as I do. Probably they would be the same ones who like to have a real cd or a real dvd. Guilty as charged!!

Ecobird club has replied to Herb Riddle club
Thank you very much Herb. I had to keep the shot tight in the main image in particular because of parked cars, but it was very quiet on this latest visit. Even then it was difficult to get a shot of the town hall which is quite an impressive looking building, originally the Sheriff Court, as there are always parked cars.

Ecobird club has replied to Xata club
I do tend to agree with you Isabel. There is nothing like holding a real book in your hand. I must admit I do own a kindle and it has it's place, - as you get older or when your eyes are tired being able to change the font size helps and being able to adjust the light so that you can read at night. Also being limited in space i sadly have no room for the hundred of books I would like to keep so I buy the books I really want to keep and buy the cheap or free ones on kindle as well. A compromise, but one I can live with.

HBM and hav a good week Isabel. I hope you are feeling better today

Thank you very much Markus. To be fair he wasn't nearly as prolific or successful as the
original ;-)))) He only had a couple of very minor hits like the one in the link, and a film to his name before returning to photography. He appears to have dated the model Celia Hammond and been friendly with Chrissie Shrimpton and that is all I could find out. I had never heard of him but when I found the pseudonym he used as a singer I couln't resist using him as my link!!

The PiP presents a real sad sight of the same bookstore,
but both photos are wonderful documents of the times.
Thanks for the information, Carol.
For this lovely antiquarian bookstore, let's hope it survives the crises of our time
and flourishes again, if the stock wasn't simply sold almost completely.
Despite everything, I wish you a pleasant week.
Ecobird club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
Thank you very much * ઇઉ *. I do hope it survives. The next book festival starts on 23rd September so this may give this shop and all the other little independent book stores a boost. You never know, - with the prices of ebooks seemingly rising there may well be a resurgence in the appeal of real books.

Despite hard times I did note the water bowls beneath the seat. Presumably these are for their canine visitors and not the bookworms;-)))

I really like these old bookstores and especially your beautiful picture.
We have a crime series "Tatort"(Site of Crime) in which a bookseller acts as a detective.

Thank you very much Heide. That sounds like my sort of series, - crime and books!! I have passed my love of books on to my younger daughter. We took her car for service and repair and had hours to wait, - we spent most of it in the bookshop and the rest in the coffee shops with our purchases!

Hi Carol

Unfortunately people don't seem to have books any more. They stroke their phones, and watch the telly.. That seems to occupy their minds!
